Captains Log

Posted on Sunday 8 May 2016 @ 11:29 by Captain John "Apollo" Barstow, M.D.

626 words; about a 3 minute read

John walked into his quarters carrying the doctors bag from his ready room. He sat it down next to the door so he wouldn't forget it when he left to go get his physical. Barstow grunted as he stood back up and yawned, it had been a long day. He stripped off his jacket and turtleneck, tossing them both on his desk before looking around the room. It was the first time he'd made it to his quarters since coming aboard. Next to the door was a picture of him in his Marine Dress Blues with his awards and pilots wings on his chest and his First Lieutenants bars on his shoulders. The picture had been taken about a month before his first transfer to Merlin. Apollo turned to walk into the living room area, passing the replicator and dinette set that were across from the door. Along the far bulkhead, under the center of the three big windows, was a sofa and coffee table with a computer terminal and two arm chairs. Next to that was a small table with pictures of his ex Scoops, Jane Anders who had also been his Tactical Information Officer or TIO when he flew. Next to that a picture of his graduating Marine boot class and right next to that a picture of his 6 year old daughter Sierra. Both mother and daughter were avid martial artists, studying jujitsu and akido, and both were dressed in black gi's in the pictures. The Commander stopped and picked up his daughters picture, touching the glass with his fingertips momentarily before setting the picture back down and moving to his desk, Burg had done well it seemed.

John dropped his muscular frame into the chair with a sigh and sat back, looking at the other three pictures in the room. On the bulkhead next to the dinette set was a picture of Valkyrie fighters and opposite that on the other bulkhead was a picture of two broadsword class fighters conducting an attack. Finally, behind him was a display with a picture of the Merlin pulling out of orbit of a planet. He turned back towards the desk and set his hands on the cool glass top, taking a second to watch the dock outside the window before looking to the terminal, "computer, begin log."

The computer chirped and John sat back, "Captains personal log, stardate two-three-niner-three-zero-five point zero-seven. This is my first log as this ships commander and I have to say my initial excitement has only gotten stronger. Nostalgia aside, this ship is still one of the finest in the fleet. After meeting most of my senior staff today I ave to say I am a little more at ease with taking my command. On paper they all looked great, and in person they have not disappointed. All have jumped right into their positions and I think we should be ready to go in the next two days," he said then paused and took a breath, composing his thoughts, "we are slated to go to the proving and trial grounds near Starbase Two-One-Two. In route we'll give our engines a workout then we'll give sensor, defensive and offensive systems a thorough test run. From there I plan to find someplace for our Marines, fighters and strat ops all to get a chance to work together. In all we should only be at the proving grounds for four days, as long as nothing major pops up on us," he said then paused again and looked at the crono on the bottom of the screen, "however, for now I must get showered and head down for my physical. Computer, end log," he said with a smile and stood up, heading off to his bedroom.
