Mission: Old, New Ship
Location: holodeck Four / Tans Quarters
Timeline: MD8 - Morning of Day Two pt3
762 words - 1.5 OF Standard Post Measure

ON :

Having spent most of the morning going from ride to ride, David insisted that they take a break and get something to eat. Of course, given they were in a holodeck, and not actually at Six Flags Magic Mountain, it would have meant them leaving, but David had provided for the inevitable hunger, especially of his two Children, who seemed to burn off food as they swallowed it in his opinion. Heading for one of the countless cafe's, they took one of the tables and David went to 'order' ...

They had picked a summer day for their visit, and the holodeck wasn't scrimping on the weather. Enjoying their sandwiches and cold drinks, Mia endlessly pointed out rides they still needed to visit, while Mackenzie pointed out the fact that she was constantly babbling. The two girls did what sisters did expertly ... They argued ! ... Lana and David knew better than to interfere, as that usually made them join forces and go after their parents, not with pouting and crying, but with pure childlike logic. The term 'out of the mouths of babes' did not do justice to what these two girls could reduce you to with their unfathomable ability to stun their parents to silence.

After their lunch it was back to the endless rides. Granted, David was getting used to them by now and had actually discarded the 'sick bag' his Daughter had cheekily supplied. but the sun was finally beginning to set, thanks to some imaginative re-programming, and he told them they had one more ride then home.

Both Mia and Mackenzie instantly picked a ride called .... 'Tatsu' .... The one ride David had insisted they were not going to go on ! ... Despite the fact that the holo-program was tweaked to allow four year old Mia to ride, regardless of her not meeting the ride height requirements, it was decided when Lana grinned and he knew he'd lost any argument before it began. holding up his hands in submission they headed over to their final ride ....

Tatsu was one of those rides that supplied everything, from negative gee, to inverted turns, to vomit-inducing drops, he wondered why no-one had suggested the ride to training fighter pilots to acclimatise them to the unfathomable sensations they would be forced to contend with once graduated. They climbed aboard and set off ........

Home ::

Back at their quarters, the girls talked incessantly about which ride was better while Lana and David tried to keep up with the constantly topic changes only Children could apparently cope with. But withing ten minutes they had calmed down and five minutes later had both fallen asleep. David picked up Mackenzie while Lana gently lifted Mia of the sofa and carried them to their room. Lowering them onto their beds they dimmed the lighting and closed the door. Both knew of course that allowing them to sleep now would ensure they were wide awake well into the evening, but it had been worth it.

Dropping onto the sofa David waited while Lana replicated coffee for them both then sat beside him.

"When are you due in duty ?" she asked.

"Not for a while yet." he said, glancing at the time, "Today was OK wasn't it."

"Yes, they needed the time with you." his wife replied quietly. David looked at her as she inched closer to him before resting her head on his shoulder.

"I needed time with you all." he said, running his fingers through her hair while sipping at the hot and welcome coffee, "I'm not sure how often we'll be able to do this getting away thing, but we'll try to make it as often as possible."

They sat together, no need for words as they enjoyed each others' company and closeness. he knew that he would have given up Starfleet at the drop of the proverbial hat had Lana asked him to remain in San Francisco with her and their Children, this way they could be together, him with his role as an Officer on the Merlin, while she ran the school. It was something she had devoted her life to, and could now continue, albeit in a much different environment than previously, with new challenges, new pupils, and a new goal, she would mentor some of her pupils into academia and hopefully, give them everything they needed to excel. David had silently thanked Commander Barstow numerous times for getting his Family here and did so again as Lana fell asleep in his arms ..........
