Commander Cale Llewellyn was in his office going over the new crewmembers that they had picked up recently when he notice they had acquired a new Chief Science Officer to replace the Romulan science officer. This Artis Lomar was an unjoined Trill and had spent most of his time on a starbase so, this assignment would be different for him. Llewellyn was eager to meet him, and so he decided it was time to call him in for a meeting. "Commander Lllewellyn to Lieutenant Lomar, please report to the XO's office at your earliest convenience," Cale said into his combadge and awaited Lomar's reply.

"Within the half hour, Commander," came Lomar's voice in reply. "I'm relatively close by. Lomar out." Artis, recently unpacked and already buried in some work, took in a heavy breath once his ended the connection, and gave his nearby staff a sturdy look. "Try not to touch anything," he added just before leaving the room for the nearest turbolift.

Not longer than 10 minutes late, he chimed the door at the Executive office. When it opened, he stepped in and presented himself, standing tall, eyes forward, and awaiting orders. "Thank you the invitation," he said briefly.

"I thought it was high time you and I met, Lieutenant. As you may or may not know I am the former and first Chief Science Officer of this great ship. I was promoted to Lieutenant and Second Officer and when our then XO left the ship I was promoted once again this time to Lieutenant Commander. I think all too swiftly because I never had any training in the command area," Llewellyn said softly. "I wasn't even sure I wanted to be the executive officer of this ship but Captain Barstow saw something in me that he never told me but I took the job anyway. I wasn't ready for it and made many mistakes and ultimately left the ship for another position. But when I heard the ship had gone missing, I knew I had to help find her. Luckily for me, the ship I was on was assigned to the mission. Barstow and I had a nice reunion and he told me that the ship needed a good science officer, so I volunteered for the post. And the rest they say, is that. Now tell me a little about yourself that isn't in your service record, please."

The Trill chewed his lip as he listened, not offering a nod but instead focusing with straight intensity at the words. It was a lot of information - a rather personal history.

"There's not much about me that isn't on the record," Artis replied. He opened his mouth to continue a reply, caught himself and paused. A heavy expression took over his face, deep in concentration.

"I have a son," he said softly. "Samyl. He's seventeen and easily inherited the combined stubbornness of both myself and his Vulcan mother. He is, and I say this with true fatherly pride, pleasantly insufferable." The Trill shifted slightly in his posture, pausing again for a few brief seconds. "My entire science career, in Star Fleet, has been about combat. From ships of battle to research into shield design. A wanted to try that whole exploration thing I've heard about - so I put in for the transfer."

He paused again, though his face showed he would begin to speak again. "I dislike eggs, and thoroughly enjoy bike riding." Considering his mission accomplished, he gave his Executive officer a smile and a nod. "Suitable?"

"That is most suitable, Lieutenant. You've led a sheltered life in Starfleet but I intend to see that you get the chance to spread your wings. Your research will not be in the area of weaponry and shields if I can help it. I hate it when a scientist's study is used for combat and destroying life. As Starfleet officers, our mandate is to seek out life not destroy it. I know there are times when we may need to find ways to halt an enemy's advance into our territory, but this is not one of those times.

"I am here for any help that you require. I know we may have different specialties but they may be able to draw from each other. I have been lucky to not have been relegated to a life of research in the name of destruction," Cale said to the older officer. "I want you to know that I am here not only as a superior officer but also as a mentor. And, I want very much for us to be friends as well as a fellow officer. I see great things in you, Lieutenant, and it is my job to encourage those things in you.Well, as I assume you have a staff to meet and, I know from personal experience that it's a fairly large staff, get to know and, I will not keep you here any longer than is necessary. Do you have any questions for me?"

Artis took and held a silent breath, letting the XO's words settle.

"I'm ready to jump right in," he offered. "We've got much to do."

"Well then let's get you started and you're quite right. Do you need any assistance with the staff? Most of them are still hold-overs from when I was Chief." Cale asked as the two officers walked out of the office together
