Personal History | Saren was born in 2320 on the Romulan homeworld. His father was a scientist and his mother an engineer, so he gained heavy interest in both areas as he grew up. When he was thirty, as all Romulans were required to, he joined the Romulan military. There he trained for ten years in all aspects of military culture and afterwards served for ten years aboard the warbird IRW T’dir as an engineer. He then spent another ten years as a science officer on the ship. As he was an average officer and with no military ambitions, he knew he would never rise far in the ranks of the Impreial Navy, so he retired from the military to go work as a research scientist at a prestigious school on Romulus. It was at the school when the first signs of his elemental nature started to show. He would have various bizarre, but lucid dreams. Occasionally equipment would fail around him, sometimes in spectacular shows of sparks. Other times he might have little flashes of ‘insight’ into a situation or know vehemently when someone was lying. He often went to the temple of the elements to try and make sense of all the strange feelings and dreams he was having. A priest took interest in him and asked him to join, even just as a basic acolyte so he could continue his science studies. Saren didn’t know it, but his latest ‘elemental experience’ which had brought down a computer system that the Tal’Shiar has placed a trace program in, attracted the attention of the local agent, who started watching him closely. At the summer festival of the fire elements, a senior priest who lived on another continent, came to see the festival. When she looked in Saren’s eyes, she knew he was much more than he seemed, he was an elemental, although an unwitting one. Normally there would be signs when an elemental was born, but it seemed that the signs around him had been missed. She brought him to the temple after the festival and had him tested. It seemed the signs were missed because he was an elemental of the Arch-element. These elementals often arrived without ‘fan-fare’. That evening, the Tal’Shiar decided that they would extract Saren and see if he posed a threat to the Empire and if not, see if he could be used as a weapon. So, while he was walking home pondering what the priestess had said, he was kidnapped and brought to a Tal’Shiar facility. For the next two months, Saren was put through all sorts of interrogations, tests, and experiments. Some triggered responses of various natures, others didn’t. One Romulan guard did get hurt once when a computer panel exploded, but that was the extent of the progress of 'weaponizing' Saren. The Tal’Shiar were patient though. What wasn’t patient was the Hobus star. Saren was being transferred to a different facility when the star exploded. Even though Saren was in a transport with no windows, he could see the blast coming in his mind's eye as Romulus started to disintegrate. He closed his eyes, expecting to become one with the universe. The next thing he heard was a Federation security officer yelling, “Hands in the air! Hands in the air!” He looked around at his surroundings and somehow, someway, he had been transported to the bridge of a Federation starship, the USS Galloway, that was in the alpha quadrant. He explained to the Captain as much as he could what had happened. The Captain, being a cautious man, thought perhaps Saren was a spy, somehow beamed aboard from a cloaked ship, had him taken to the brig. It was eight hours later when the Captain came to visit him after having received a high priority briefing on the destruction of the Hobus star and Romulus. During their discussion, Saren realized that even if he went back to Romulan space, his information was in the Tal’Shiar databanks and that if he were discovered to be alive, he would continue to be hunted, so he requested asylum. It took three months for permanent asylum to be granted. Now he had to figure out what to do with himself. Despite having been granted asylum, he was an outcast and didn’t have anywhere to go. So, after some research, he decided to apply for Starfleet Academy as even though it had a fighting force, it wasn’t a pure military. It took more interviews than most applicants had to go through to be accepted, but due to his abilities and the information he had available on Romulan culture, he was accepted. He fast tracked through academy and graduated in 2389. He spent his first assignment on the USS Edimon as a science officer. The tour lasted 2 years. He then went on to serve as the Assistant Chief Science officer on Starbase 123 in the Beta sector. The tour lasted three years. Although he did quite well during his tours achievement wise, he had issues with other crew due to prejudices and paranoia about his heritage. He made very few friends. When a head science officer was needed for the Merlin, which was near Romulan territory, he was sent to fill the role.
