"Computer, begin log."
"First things first, I must apologize for not doing this sooner. I haven't had a great deal of time for this but I figure now is a perfect time for it. Let me start off by saying I have been considering going back to school for my doctoral degree. I don't want to leave Captain Barstow without a first officer so I've come to the conclusion that I may need to do this long distance. That may require a longer period of time than doing it in person but I'm OK with that. Because, it will allow me some time to come to a decision about other things.
"I also want to put this in for the official record; I have come to a conclusion that the captain gave me this promotion for a reason and I intend to make him proud of me. This away mission seems like a perfect chance to do so.
"I don't intend allow this "ability" to assist Barstow in any way I can. This explains why I have always been able to gauge another person's emotional state with surprising accuracy. I will say that I am by no means an expert in the use of my empathy. But with some practice, I feel that it will be a boon for both me and the captain. Though I may have to have that Vulcan nurse's assistance. She was of immense help during that initial mind-meld and I felt some of her control "rubbing off" on me. As soon as I get back to the ship after this away mission, I intend to seek her out and ask for her counsel.
"End log."
