Mission: The New Collective
Location: USS Merlin; Lt. Kayhill's Quarters
Timeline: After Figuring Out The Borg
526 words - 1.1 OF Standard Post Measure

John had a little bit of time to check out his quarters after the meeting and before he met with Llewellyn. Not like he had much therein his quarters; everything of his had been destroyed when the Borg attacked the colony. He was going to be busy replicating new clothes and uniforms. Anything adding more of a personal touch to the room would have to wait.

He grabbed a quick sonic shower and as he was putting his pants on, the communicator beeped, “Communications to Lieutenant Kayhill.”

“Go ahead”, he answered.

“The communication channel you requested has been established”, was the reply.

He smiled and threw his under-tunic on quickly. His sister didn’t need to see him half-naked. Sitting down at his desk he pressed the computer panel.

“Hey”, he said to the screen as his sister’s face filled it. “How is the best singer in the galaxy?”

“I don’t know”, she replied with a smirk. “When I meet them, I’ll let you know.”

“Don’t be so humble”, John said to her. “I heard your latest work, it is awesome.”

“That’s not what Avarien of Betazed said in his review”, she answered with a frown.

“Well, not everyone has taste”, John quipped.

“Now that we have that out of the way”, she said. “How are you? What’s going on at that little rock you are stationed at?”

He sighed before responding, “It’s gone, well the colony is anyways. The Borg attacked.”

“Are you ok?”, she asked, her eyes showing her own fear from her past.
“I’m here talking to you”, John answered, lifting his hand to the screen, wiggling the fingers. “I got a new hand though. I a touch too slow hitting the deck.”

“Where did they come from? You are on the far end of no-where”, she said. “What do they want?”

“We don’t know”, he answered. “I’m on a ship called the Merlin and we are going to stop them before they do any more damage and get some answers.”

“Be careful”, she said. “Otherwise you won’t get to come to my wedding.”

John’s eyes popped open, “You mean Chuck finally got the nerve to ask you?”

She sighed and scowled at him, “It is Charles and you know that. He’s a good guy, just because he doesn’t bench press Klingons before breakfast doesn’t mean you don’t need to respect him.”

“Alright, alright, Charles”, he said with a smirk. “Look, my time window is almost done. They don’t let these long-distance channels stay open long and I’ve got some Marines to get in-order.”

She nodded and replied, “Ok, but I won’t forgive you if you don’t make it to the wedding.”

“I promise sis, it will take more than a few chip-heads to keep me from being there”, he answered. “I love you Songbird.”

With that, the channel closed and despite the coming storm, John was happier than he had been in quite some time.
