Everything had changed in just a few days. Caroline had left, her friend and only real connection on Merlin. Mathias had betrayed the crew in his attempt to save the Captain and Anya couldn't figure out how she felt about that... Was Mathias still a friend? That she needed to figure out and soon so the conversation she wanted with Mathias had grown into something more than she had originally intended.
She pressed the chime to his quarters, still mulling over how she intended to approach this with him.
Mathias opened the door, his normal jovial smile somewhat absent. "Ah Anya, come on in." stepping back to allow her access to his quarters. There was the tell tale signs of some tears having been shed, the rims of his eyes red.
The Benzite stepped into the room enough for the doors to slide closed behind her, her emotions bubbling up to a point that she was shaking with anger and upset.
"What the hell Mathias... What drove you to do that and what has happened to Caroline?"
"I had to do something for the Captain, it worked right? And if I ever catch that misbegotten MU woman I will kill her." he growled. "And as for Caroline, she went to spend time with her grandmother, who is dying. I am glad I left when I did, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to... to.." Mathias turned his back and walked away a few steps to control his emotions, still feeling his heart hurting. "I wouldn't have been able to say goodbye." He turned back around to look at Anya, tears trickling down his cheeks. "I would do something like that for you, Anya. I would make a deal with the devil to save you too."
"I don't know how to feel about this... But I have no other friends here now, not now Caroline has gone before I could even say goodbye!"
She wasn't one given to outbursts of emotion but right now she was spiraling, lost and hurt that her friend would go without even leaving her a message. She too found she couldn't hold back the torrent and started to sob, her breathing heavy as she gulped in air, lunging forward wrapping her arms around Mathias.
Mathias wrapped his arms around Anya, "I count you as a friend Anya, I am sorry if I betrayed you somehow. The explosions, it threw me back to when the Cetea attacked Starbase 308, too many people were injured or killed. So much destruction. "Holding onto Anya tightly while she sobbed.
"I'm sorry, you don't need this but I've laid out so many bodies in the last few days... Thrown into a situation I have never had to deal with before and then to find my closest friend has gone without so much as a good bye!"
The sobs were wracking her entire body and she could not hold it back.
"Anya, go ahead let it out, I won't rust" Mathias said soothingly. "I am sure she will contact you. It was really hurting her to leave like she did. She was being torn to pieces especially with knowing she doesn't have too much time left with her grandmother. I know what it is like to deal with so many bodies. You did well, and I am sorry I wasn't there to help you."
She pressed herself further into Mathias, realising that no matter what had happened or the deal with the devil that he had made, he was her friend, the only one she had here now. Her breathing was easing as the sobs started to diminish down until she could finally let go of him.
"I'm sorry!"
"Anya, its okay. If you ever need to have a good cry, I'll be available. Though now I feel like watching a movie and eating a pint of ice cream. Rocky Road ice cream." Mathias giving a slight smile. "Glad you came to see me, and glad you made it back in one piece."
"It was horrible Mathias... I was so scared... I haven't been so scared since my first day in the Romulan mine!"
She wiped away the tears on her cheeks, feeling strong enough to step back from him and stand on her own.
"Anya you are strong and you were in the Romulan Mines? That in itself shows that you are very strong. You did well, you are fantastic." Mathias walking over and getting a damp cloth to bring over to Anya, "Here, wipe those tears away, we will survive this." giving a smile, his own tears drying up.
"Thank you" she accepted the cloth and dabbed her cheeks gently with it before turning her violet eyes up to Mathias and really regarding him, as if staring into his soul. "Can you explain to me what happened... I didn't really follow it on the planet. Why did you make that deal with with alternative fox woman?"
Mathias motioned towards a seat and took one for himself. "I had gone outside to get a breathe of air, I was feeling slightly claustrophobic and the acrid smoke gave me a flashback of when Starbase 308 had been attacked by the Sona. Anyway, said woman came up and caught me off guard. She could have killed me outright but she didn't as she wanted to get off the planet. Long story short, I felt that was the only way I could get the information to rescue the Captain. Apparently she has a use for my Mirror Universe self from what she said so thought she'd use me. She was right, where it came to our Captain. I don't want anything to happen to the Captain and her babies. So I was willing to make a deal with the devil to get that information. That woman.. kissed me." he shuddered.
"I was lucky that she started off by lying to me about the babies lineage... I over turned that in the first instance and I was able to set my Tricorder to polygraph... She undid herself but I was afraid for my life when she started threatening me."
She knew protocol but still had neglected to activate the modules full batch of security measures, why? She knew better than that. Instead she had sat there dumbfounded and afraid and just let her walk away.
"She is a rather sordid and a compelling woman. Also, she was pregnant, how does one get used to the fact that she is sheer pure evil. And is choosing that, reveling in it. I feel sorry for her baby who will be born and said baby will be raised in that sort of environment therefore continuing the evil. Unless it has a nugget of goodness inside due to whomever the father is. I just don't... know if I have hope for that child. I don't know if she will even change once the baby is born or will just look at it as something to be utilized as a tool." Mathias frowning at this.
"Her motivation for seeing me was the check on the child... It sparks hope that she may actually be a mother to it once born".
Anya shifted, suddenly feeling a little awkward. "I should go... I'm sorry to have disturbed you Lieutenant!"
Mathias raised an eyebrow at Anya, "You can come visit when you need to talk or we can make an appointment to have lunch. Sound good? And you have done good coming to see me too." giving a bit of a smile.
"I didn't know who else to go too... Thank you, and the same to you!"
She was about to leave but her legs had a mind of their own. She had turned back to him and thrown her arms around his neck and pulled him into a hug before she could stop herself.
Mathias embraced Anya once more. "You are a great doctor, Anya Nir'anyar, you take care of the heart, as well as the body in caring for us all." smiling brightly. he didn't mind giving her an embrace as an embrace was also a part of healing a hurting heart and soul.
"Thank you" she said once more before releasing him, bidding her farewell and making for the door.
"See you later Anya, for my check up on my arm." Mathias stated.
