Air Group Mission and Personnel

(Good source for races and race particulars: http://strpg.patrickgoodman.org/ ) MISSION STATEMENT - Modern Warfare, Shielding, and Warp have created an environment that with Mainline Ship to Ship combat, Fighters became 'obsolete' for direct ship combat. A mainline ships long range sensors find threats before any fighter can, its shielding and armament are not penetrable by a fighter, and the modern Targeting systems quickly hone in and destroy a fighter before any close range is possible. However, mission do occur where fighter support is still very much needed. These include such as: ground action support, Escort Class and Smaller Support and Escort Duties, Planetary support, Space Hazard infiltration (Asteroid fields, Nebulae (makes everyone equal and the fighters superior), Sargasso areas, etc), Personnel Transfer Escort Duties, Fighter combat with Races that still use fighters, blockade runner duties, etc. Thus, some larger Federation vessels are equipped with a small Space Fighter Force comprised of tactical fighters and their support. For those Federation Starfleet Vessels with Marine Squads in areas designated for such Deterrent Operations, there is a full set of fighters and support craft equipped. CAG Department - Starfleet kept the long standing tradition of terminology for the fighters, even though the medium is now space besides atmosphere support on planets. The CAG is considered a department head and reports directly to the Captain, respecting the 2O and XO positions. CAG Direct Personnel - Merlin Contingent 25 Officers - CAG, DCAG, 18 VAS Pilots, 2 EWS Pilots, 5 TAS Pilots 34 Enlisted - CAG Assistant, 12 Fighter EW System Crew (Valkyrie and Broadsword), 6 EW-01 EW System Crew, 15 TAS Evac/Medi/System Crew CAG Indirect Personnel - Craft Maintenance, Craft Mission Modules, Craft Logistics support. These personnel are in the Operations, Engineering, Flight Control, and Tactical departments of the mainline ship, but with the CAG in the chain of command for fighter preparedness and readiness for missions and their specific parameters for completion.
