Overview

Risians are the indigenous people of the planet Risa in the Alpha Quadrant. By their very nature Risians are a friendly, helpful, and selfless society. They prefer a peaceful, relaxed existence to the hustle and bustle of most worlds. They are very close in appearance to Humans and Betazoids, save a small disc on their foreheads called a ja'risia. Their internal biology, however, is quite different and Risians age slower than humans.

One of the most striking aspects of Risian society is their open sexuality. They practice a mysterious sexual rite called jamaharon which has been found to be extremely pleasing---even to non-Risians. To take part in jamaharon, one only has to exhibit or accept a statue called the Horga'hn, which is considered the Risian symbol of sexuality and fertility. Today the Horga'hn has come to symbolize the Risian people and their culture as a whole.

Risian Language

Although fairly easy to learn, Risian isn't spoken much off the home planet. Most visitors don't take the time to learn it, while the average Risian speaks at least one or two additional languages themselves.

Festivals

Lohlunat, or the Festival of the Moon, is an important Risian celebration every year. It is held at breathtaking Suraya Bay on Risa.

Arts

The arts play a major role in everyday Risian society, and many remarkable artists, musicians, and sculptors have hailed from there. Most of the arts revolve around the Risian attitudes toward sexuality and physical beauty. Poetry is also a very popular art form with the native peoples.
