Decompressing...Again

438 words; about a 2 minute read
Cale walked into the Botany lab remembering his first official act as an officer on board the Merlin. He had given Doctor Miller this space for her pharmaceutical plants. He wondered what had gone wrong since then. After a long heavy sigh, he said "Computer, begin log."
"You may begin when ready, Commander" came the familiar feminine tones in its reply.
Cale looked towards the ceiling and wondered when the computer began referring to us by our ranks.
"I feel the need to apologize to Lieutenant Tillatix for my indiscretion in her office earlier today. Evidently, I was given some erroneous intelligence; though the purpose for keeping me in the dark is still as clear as mud to me, I will endeavor to keep up appearances from now on. I will give this apology to her as soon as it is safe to do so.
"Next on my docket is Lieutenant Caleb Mitchell, our new counselor, who is a friend of a friend from the USS Hera. Lieutenant Brendan Dernah wrote me about him before his ship was decommissioned. He told me to watch out for a new officer coming aboard my ship.
"And as my last official act as Executive Officer, I would like to say it's been an honor serving under Commander Barstow. He has been an exceptional mentor and an amazing friend to me during my time on board. I only hope I have been as good an officer as he tells me I have been. I feel different in that matter.
"I feel as though I have let him down from get go. I have not put in the required amount of research and study this position requires of it and me. I was too busy with my nose buried in other books trying to complete my doctorate. So I let my attention to the details of my career slip; and yes I still desire to be a career officer. That has not changed at all.
"My desire to continue in my current role has increased 1,000 fold. My time as XO of this ship will always be a brilliant experience and I will cherish the friendships I have made for a lifetime and beyond."
"Computer, locate Dr. Miller please."
"Dr. Miller is in Sickbay at the current moment, Commander."
"Excellent! Oh and computer, file this log and send copies to both Captain Barstow and myself, please."
"Acknowledged and completed, Commander."
"Thank you," Cale said as he stepped out the door. And when the computer said, "You're welcome", he began to laugh and feel a little disconcerted at the same time.
