Disaster!

Kyhl pressed the chime for Anya's quarters and then clasped her hands behind her back and waited. It was a bit late, but everyone was so busy that this was probably the only time they could discuss the situation. Although, Kyhl wasn't sure how Anya would react to her showing up at her door in the late evening to discuss her favourite marine major.
The doors parted a second or so after the chime had been pressed and Anya was sitting on the sofa before two large windows looking out over the view of Deep Space 21 and the Briar Patch behind it. She was distracted from the vista in favour of the mountain of technical manuals piled before her.
"Kyhl... What can I do for you. Save me from this mountain of paperwork!"
"You say that now..." Kyhl muttered wearily as she entered. "Sorry I've been absent. DS21 has been a bit short staffed themselves so I've been volenteering in their med bay."
She sat down across from Anya and looked at her CMO. Were those dark circles under her eyes, "You're keeping yourself busy. I won't keep you long but even you might need a break."
"Well before you jump in, I just need to let you know that you may be picking up some of my work in the coming days and months. The Captain has seen fit to position me as the Ships second officer... hence all the tec manuals." she was tired. Perhaps now was the time to get some rest... although she knew she would need to be off the ship shortly for its refit and she still had packing to complete.
"What can I help you with Kyhl... Let me think about something else for a bit!"
"Congratulations on the new position." Kyhl said warmly. "Don't worry about Medical. I'll support you however you need."
The Andorian bit her lip before continuing. "Well... it's about our favourite Marine. Scarlet sustained an injury during the filiment incident that could have killed him. And the stubborn ass won't agree to surgery to fix his damn nerve damage."
"We have a veterinarian on board don't we... Please tell me we can have him put down like a lame... oh what's the Earth animal, one that people ride, has four legs and a long wiry tail... Panda, yes I'm sure that's it?" but the Benzite had to say she still wasn't sure if she was right. And she could see from the look in her friends eyes that this was serious and not something that could be joked about with.
"What do you need from me? We can certify him medically unfit to remain on duty... I can push the paperwork through in the morning. We could force him to see the wisdom of our ways... and that it is the only way!"
Kyhl smirked. "As much as I'd love to be rid of him once and for all, I don't think we can have him put down. But yes, I'd like you to put the paperwork through that with his current condition he should be removed from duty. It seems the only thing he's concerned about is doing his job so that might force him to think logically."
"Which means I'm certain he will be hunting me down to object to the medical decision as soon as he finds out!" Anya realised that would mean yet another difficult conversation with the man, even if the two of them had started to develop something of a bizarre respect for each other despite the mutual loathing.
The Andorian frowned. "Leave that part to me. Hell, I'll hand deliver the notice to the stubborn mule." She paused for a moment. "I don't want you to be forced into this, but I think it's the only way we can get through to him."
"In that case, computer, update current personnel records. Scarlett, Major, David. Amend service status as removed from active duty. Authorisation Nir'anyar omega three three charlie and notify the Major also!"
She smiled as the computer acknowledged the orders. "Give it a few minutes and I'm sure he'll be knocking on the door!"
"That was easy." Kyhl said with a sigh. "What was it exactly you wanted to talk to me about? I guess we have a couple of minutes before the Major comes knocking."
"My time is going to be split between Sickbay and ship operation duties... I need you to take on more of the day to day running of sickbay... if you feel up to it?"
The Chief Medical Officer hated to ask this of her second but the opportunity to serve on the ship command staff was something she couldn't turn down, not if she wanted to eventually command her own medical ship or facility. Also given her recent blunder with the volcano it was nothing short of a miracle that the Captain had asked her to step in as the ships second officer.
Kyhl nodded without hesitation. "Of course! This is a great opportunity and I'll help you however I can." The Andorian woman stood up and smiled warmly. "Congratulations again doctor."
"Thank you... Lets scale the Scarlett challenge before we start congratulating though. I feel this is going to be a bit of a mountain!" already feeling an impending sensation of doom knowing the Major would be less than enthused.
On cue, the comm chirped. Scarlet's voice was barely audible as it spoke one word. "Understood."
Kyhl blinked as the comm closed. "Well... that was anticlimactic."
"I agree... I feel cheated out of a good argument!" but in truth she had started to develop a connection with the man, no matter how she truly felt about him as a person he was something close to being a friend. Perhaps she needed to reach out to him personally to talk in a similar fashion that he had listened to her.
