Intermission
Location: Melody Jones' quarters
Timeline: MD9 Late Evening
902 words - 1.8 OF Standard Post Measure
ON:
Melody found herself once more in the tropical paradise that she had come to a few weeks ago in her dreams. This time, however she was wearing her standard issue uniform. The beach on the other hand was exactly the same.
This time she walked quickly to the clearing with the camp fire, hoping to one again find her mother there, thinking that if this was a dream she wanted to spend as much time with her as she could before she woke. To her delight, she mother was once again sat on the same bench reading her book. As she approached, her mother looked up and smiled "Hello again Sweetie, I'm glad you're back."
Deciding to just go with it Melody sat down next to her "So am I. I miss you so much......." She started as despite herself, tear started to well in the corners of her eyes.
"Hey, don't be sad Sweetie" her mother soothed her and drew her into her arms "lets just enjoy this time we have together. You know I'm always with you."
Melody nodded, started to feel happier "I know mom, I know" as she snuggled into her mothers arms. For a dream, it was all so detailed. Melody was beyond caring at this point.
Her Mother looked behind her then said "Would you like a drink?"
Melody turned her head and found a small table had appeared with two glasses of traditional lemonade sitting on it. She reached out for both and handed one to her mother. AS she did she could feel the condensation on the outside of the glass run over her fingers. The coldness of the glass. when she tasted it, the bitterness of the lemons.... all so real!
"So" Her mother started "My Little Girl is now out there, flying a starship. Your father is so proud. It's a shame he can't be here to tell you himself."
Melody paused for a moment, a small flicker of confusion crossing her face "How did you......." Then of course it came to her. This was her dream Of course her mother would know everything.....But with it being her dream........ Why wasn't her father here? Her subconscious would have wanted both parents to be here no?
Her mother just smiled and answer her unspoken question "You're father's........ schedule is different from mine I'm afraid Sweetie,. but don't worry I'm sure he'll catch up with you when he can.
Melody shrugged and let the comment pass, even though she though it was slightly strange. "Ok mom." She then changed the subject back to her promotion "Yeah, it's great isn't it. I was quite surprise I didn't get court marshalled after what happened........
Her Mother picked up on that "What happened with Save'ena you mean?"
Melody nodded. Her Mother went on "You really like her don't you?
"Of course, she's my best friend."
Her mother sighed "Sweetie........." She paused wanted to guide her child without telling her what to do "You have to be honest with yourself if you are ever going to be happy. I'm sure Save'ena will understand and you never know she might......." her voice trialed off as she gave her a knowing look.
Not fully understanding, or perhaps not wanting to....... Melody nodded "I know mom" she replied. Her mother just smiled, knowing that tone of a child agreeing with their parents but not really meaning it. She knew would come to her own answers in time.
Her Mother looked up suddenly "I'm afraid our time is up."
Somehow knowing that her alarm was about to go off, Melody throwing her arms around her mother one last time "Love you mom!"
Her mother squeezed back "Love you too Sweetie. I'll see you again soon"

Melody eyes flickered open as her alarm just started beeping. She pressed the control panel and silenced it, then lay there in her bed for a moment feeling much happier than she had done the last time she had woken from that dream. She reached up and removed the neurocortical monitor Caroline had given her and placed it back on her nightstand. She had made up her mind that it was just a dream but still..... something at the back of her mind bothered her. The details. All so real. When she had recorded a few more instances, she would go back to Caroline no doubt to be told that it was all just a dream. She was in no rush as she felt she was probably wasting Caroline's time.
With that she dragged herself out of bed and headed for the sonic shower.

On the Bench, Victoria just sat there for a moment after her daughter had vanished. Her reverie was broken as a shadow was cast over her.
A tall man stood before her. "You didn't tell her! His tone was hard and impatient "She still thinks this is a dream. How can she ever help us if she doesn't think this is real? You are wasting time........."
Victoria looked up. Her voice was soft, but her words were as steal "This is MY TIME with MY daughter and I WILL SPEND IT AS I SEE FIT!
The tall man backed off slightly then leaned in close and whispered harshly......
"Do not forget our mission........... 2 of 12" and with that he turned and vanished.
