Commander John Barstow sat at his desk in his guest quarters on Starbase 306. He had been driving his command team mad with his ship's refit and changes he saw. The CO decided it'd be best to take a day or 2 and allow everyone to work. So, Barstow had decided to change hats and was going through the Task Group reports. It was quiet, at least relatively speaking, a new mission starting and a raid on a Starfleet base, but, not much else. Then he got to the USS Polaris which was undergoing refit herself. John nodded as he read through the Polaris CO's file, "a year already..." he said to himself as he saw when she'd been given the command, "computer, open a secure comlink to Hephaestus Fleetyards, Lieutenant Commander Coldbrights office."
Deianira turned, her auburn hair cascading loosely around her shoulders, at the sound of the tone indicating an incoming communication. She had been busy boxing up the last of her belongings in preparation of her move to the Polaris. She slid into the cushioned chair behind the black stone-topped desk and lightly tapped the control to accept the message and open a channel. "Commander," she said cheerily as Barstow's face appeared on the screen. "To what do I owe the honor, sir?"
Barstow smiled as she appeared on the screen, "good afternoon,," he greeted, "I just wanted to check in and see how the refit is going, and be just generally nosy," he added with a grin.
"All according to schedule, commander," Deianira leaned back crossing her arms across her chest. "They're just putting the finishing touches on now. Crew will begin arriving tomorrow and we should be ready to launch within the week."
"Outstanding," the TGCO replied with a nod, "what do you think about where you're headed? I've never been in that area myself," John asked, honestly interested, "I've heard some interesting things though."
"According to Starfleet records, there's only one living Federation citizen who has been there before. He's on his way to meet with me in advance of our departure." In fact, the retired Vulcan commander Volek had already arrived at the Fleetyard but had not yet boarded the Polaris to see Deianira. "The Preserve certainly sounds like an interesting place from the bits and pieces collected in the logs from the Shasta. Political and military turmoil, unstudied spacial anomalies, and who knows what other treasures the region is hiding. I'm quite excited."
Barstow smiled, "I would be too," he replied honestly, "well, it sounds like you have everything well in hand, is there anything you need? I can sneak you the Task Force black card, just don't the Admiral," he added with a grin.
Deianira's laugh tinkled out like tiny bells. "I don't know how much good it would do where we're going, sir," she said and tucked an errant strand of hair behind her ear. "Seriously though, commander, I think we have everything we need," she said and picked up a PADD from the top of her desk. "I don't suppose you'll be able to make it to the official launch ceremony?"
"Excellent," Barstow replied and then pulled up a star chart, "not in person, however, I can run our holo-com and attend that way and see you off," he replied with a smile, happy to have been invited, most CO's shy away from having brass around.
"We'd love to have you," she said sincerely. "I'll have my yeoman forward the details over when everything is finalized."
Barstow nodded, "sounds like a plan," he replied with a smile, "I'll let you get back to moving in and I'll see you for the launch party. Barstow out."
