Did You Reboot It?

Mission: The New Collective
Location: USS Merlin - Phaser Relay Junction 5
Timeline: After Figuring out the Borg
540 words - 1.1 OF Standard Post Measure

Saren had a little time before the strategy team was to meet, so he thought he would check in with the team that was working on the ventral phaser array. He wondered how damaged it was and the nature of the damage. Stepping out of the turbo lift and taking a left, he saw someone half sticking out of an access panel. Looking at the schematics of the ship, this was where he needed to be.

“Hello”, he said to the individual.

“What’cha need”, a voice replied.

“Lieutenant O’Hara asked me to assist whoever was working on the ventral array”, Saren said.

The individual got out of the access tube; a female Tellarite who stood about 5’2”. She looked him over with a skeptical eye. She was a Petty Officer.

“So, you are the Chief Science Officer?” she asked.

“Yes, I am the Chief Science Officer”, he replied. “Lieutenant Barel.”

The Tellarite made a sound that almost sounded like a burp and said, “Petty Officer, 3rd Class Shkort. If you don’t mind me asking, what does a Chief Science Officer know about repairing ships?”

“I was an engineer aboard a Romulan Warbird for ten years”, Saren answered with a cool expression.

Shkort snorted and then said, “Well Lieutenant, what next?”

Saren said, “You began this repair, so you are the lead and I will assist. What do you need assistance with?”

“I can’t get the power relay to initiate”, Shkort answered. “I’ve gone through all repair procedures and used two new relays.”

“Then the issue isn’t the relay”, Saren said. “Have you tested the coupling socket?”

Shkort nodded with a snort.

Saren got into the access and looked at the readings that were on the system. By all readings the relay should be working. He re-ran the diagnostics and then tried the relay again, and there was still no activity.

Saren took his own tricorder and hooked it into the system, he got slightly different reading. He got out of the access way and handed Shkort her tricorder.

“Reseat the control chip on your tricorder and re-calibrate it”, Saren said. “My tricorder was getting different readings, but it isn’t designed for engineering functions, so it won’t be one-hundred percent accurate.”

It took five minutes for the reset to be done on the tricorder and then they re-scanned the relay.

“It looks like we might have a bad coupling on the next junctions”, Shkort said with a smile.

Saren nodded and they went to repair the junction. It took the two of them another twenty minutes to fix the junction. After that they tested the array and all tested fine.

Shkort looked at Saren and said, “Thank you sir. You aren’t half-bad for a Romulan.”

Saren cocked his head to the side slightly, “Thank you, I think.”

“So, tell me”, Shkort said. “What is a Romulan doing serving on a Federation starship? You running from the government or something?”

“It is a long story and better left to another time”, Saren said. “I have a meeting to go to. Good day Petty Officer.”

The Tellarite let out a snort as he walked away.
