Cold boot

Mission: A Cry from the Darkness
Location: main Engineering
1171 words - 2.3 OF Standard Post Measure

Breana's lack of sleep had her crashing on the black leather couch within her office. Lights dimmed, and low country music had her slowly drifting off into lala land. A place that she desperately needed but had been severely lacking at visiting. But that was never anything new when they where in the mist of a mission. The end would bring a deep, full, nights sleep to revive her.

It seemed as though she had just dozed off when the alarms had suddenly blasted though the office, sending her near falling off the couch as she tried to free her feet free from the tangled knot she'd managed to get them into with the plush red plaid blanket that she had pulled over her at some point. As she freed herself and bolted out of her office to race to the main computer, she barked out to Doyle "Report".

"That's what we are trying to figure out Lieutenant." Came the deep, firm, voice of the man Rathburn often referred to as her second. Pointing to the flickering computer screen that would pause at times as the officer punched in a few codes to try and get a scan ran though.

"Shit" She blurted out as she saw the screens flickering and gibberish running across the screen. Still trying to wiggle her feet into the shows that she'd only half slide on in the rush out. Fingers started doing their own work on the computer. After all she knew it wouldn't be long before the Captain attempted to get ahold of her to find out what was going on. Of course no sooner had that though ran though her mind then their showed up a blasted Ensign with a message from the Captain. Given, and returned... Breana sent the young officer on their way before refocusing herself on the computer before her.

When the alert changed to inform the crew of the intruder, Bree didn't even have to stop what she was doing, she knew well enough Doyle had left and made his way to grab some phasers. It was one of the reasons Breana knew she could trust the man with with her life. They had been though enough over the years for him to prove himself to her and of course he had that instinct of what to do at times without even needing to be told. A slight nod of her head as the weapon was sat beside her, a swipe of her hand brought it to her belt before she once more was back working on trying to remove the virus.

"It's trying to overwrite the systems, Boss." Doyle said as he kept track of the systems while they tried to figure out how to fix this mess. Every time they had started a scan to work on an idea that they hoped would clean the virus, it would backtrack and zap the scan out, refusing to give them a break.

"I'm guessing trying to mirror this problem child back to the probe isn't happening." Rathburn said with a little mutter as she pushed away from the computer a moment to pace and think. This was her ship, her home... she couldn't let a stupid virus ruin things for her. A hand lifted to run fingers back though her bangs a moment as she thought again before stepping back up to the computer. Once more she was working on putting in different codes to work on getting rid of the virus, trying to run scans and block it from attacking other different area's of the ship.

"Start shutting down all the systems one by one, other than life support. Lets see if we can stop this before it reaches that area." Rathburn finally said as she realized that the basic computer virus removal programs just weren't cutting it and more and more systems where getting attacked.

Just as she got that out, her badge went off with the summons to the bridge asap. Leaving Doyle in charge of rebooting things with an order to keep her updated. Rathburn took off in a sprint and headed up to the bridge.

A short time later, having helped the commander end the auto destruction of the ship, Rathburns badge went off. "Lieutenant, while the idea of rebooting seems to be working... the issue is coming from the fact that shortly after the system comes back online, it's picking up the virus from one of the systems that hasn't been rebooted. So it's simply rotating the virus around." Doyle reported to her.

Sonofa... Bree muttered under her breath, she hoped. As her brain ran though more possible idea's of how to get rid of this virus, she remembered a lesson she'd heard about. Long ago, a ship had been probed and ended with a virus also. What had they done? Oh yeah... nothing. But, the ship that had found them, they had contacted that virus also. Ohh! They had... She looked to the Caroline. "We are going to be sitting ducks for a few minutes Commander." Rathburn said having made her way to one of the computers on the bridge to monitor things from up there.

After giving Caroline the heads up she replied back to her second. "Doyle, we are doing a cold boot. I'll start it up here, you will need to restart it in three minutes from down there." Rathburn told him as a heads up before she took a deep breath and started working on shutting the ship down totally.

A look of total focus crossed her features once more as she readied herself. While they train you for things like this, the likely hood of ever having to do it is usually rare, or at least that was always the hope. Now, assisting in shutting off an auto destruct and cold booting a ship. She so was going to need a real beer when this was all over. If not something harder.

With a run of fingers over her computer, she put in the codes needed to do the shut down. A catch of breath and nip of her lower lip as the ship started going dark, everything shutting down. As darkness settled upon the ship, she started a mental count down.

180... As the lights started flickering back on. Breana gave a little nod of her head as fingers once more went flowing over the computer to slowly bring up the systems. As she did so, she also kept track for any signs of the virus lingering anywhere. So far so good... Bree thought to herself as her gaze never left the monitor, at least not until she realized she was still needed in the ready room. With a message to Doyle, to keep running scans as the rest of the system came up. Double checking that everything came up without issues.

Stepping back from the computer, after a momentary pause to release the breath of air she'd been holding. Turning, she headed to the ready room.
