Intermission

Timeline: MD12 mid afternoon - 2nd day shoreleave
5411 words - 10.8 OF Standard Post Measure
ON:
Melody stood outside holodeck 2, dressed in a rather striking flight suit waiting for her friend. She had been deliberately vague once again in her invitation but had specified that Saveena wear a flight suit. Her face lit up as she saw her friend approaching "Hey Sweetie, before we get to fly those fighter shuttles, I've got something special for you."
Sav came up to Melody, her flight suit dumpy and gray, with the life support belt evident around her waist. Sav smiled to Melody, and answered back, "Hey, Girrl, howya doin'? Are you sure you want to do this with me, after me dragging our mood down several times while shopping yesterday?"
Melody drew Saveena into a hug and just held her for a few moments before saying "Don't you worry about that, I'm not bothered and it's in the past. Really, it's ok. Come on, I think you'll like this, besides I thought you could do with cheering up."
Sav just about melted into that hug, wanting, no, needing the feeling of another offering untainted friendship and love for a fellow sentient. She quietly agreed, "Umm, yeah, thanks for inviting me anyway." Churrrrr. "And, yes, I do need a pick me up... just... thanks."
The holodeck doors opened reveling a large shuttlebay on a starship. Sat by itself in the middle of the hanger was a shuttlecraft, but slightly larger than the standard models. Melody stood and looked the craft over with a satisfied smile on her face "Now that is a thing of beauty. I got his program from a someone at Starfleet operations who owed me a favor. They call this the Delta Flyer and I think you're going to like it. It has a duranium re-enforced hull, retractable warp nacelles and supplemental impulse thrusters. The controls are modeled on an ancient earth science fiction program. it has a hands on control stick and several banks of levers, switches and gauges rather than just normal LCARS panels. It's fast and nimble, like you" she added with a wink.
Sav halted just inside the doors. She could see the flyer, knew this was supposed to be relaxation, and fun, but also knew it was a simulation. Cyberapathy in this environment showed the limited responses of what was to the fore and pre-programmed sensor readings, not reality of real space about being scanned by senors with ship control, electronics, and computer feedback. She would have to 'just' use her natural spatial sense, get a 'reading' of the flyer, and then go with the flow of the simulation and hope it would keep up with her.
Sav did not say anything about what flew through her head at Melody obviously trying to cheer her up, but, why? Well, she would be here, for Melody, and find out the favor's and requests Melody was obviously building up goodwill to ask for. She churred gently, "Don't you mean, fast and nimble like you? I'm the one needing control panels and automated control equipment to fly my best. With this, it's pure skill versus skill, and your the best pilot on board." Sav's ears focused fully onto Melody, showing she meant it when she said that, and, laying the groundwork for a little 'fudging' in flying later.
Melody raised an eye brow "Are you trying to lull me into a false sense of security Sweetie, because you can stop that right now" She said mock chiding. "I've seen you fly and that I can tell comes from you. You're like me, flying is in your blood and in your soul" then adding with a cheeky smile and an air of authority "Trust me, I can tell. I'm a professional"
Sav snorted out in humor, "Well, duhhh, I do love to fly. But, you know, my cyberapathy... how do YOU know I can even fly when I can't use it, hmmm?"
Melody too a step closed to her friend and smiled "Like I said I've seen you fly" She brought a hand up to Saveena head "That kind of flying can't be thought up here, it has to be felt here" as she moved her hand down over Saveena heart.
Sav churred gently, "And you have plenty of heart, that is for sure. So, let's figure out if mine even measure's up." She grinned, "What's the scoop?"
On wall of the shuttlebay there was a large monitor with a map on outlining a race course. Melody explained "To get the feel of this baby, as well as free exploration there is a race course set out with several obstacles including an asteroid belt, a particularly dense nebula, a class 2 pulsar and a subspace inversion. I was told the best time set so far was ten minutes and forty eight seconds but I think I can shave some time off that" she turned to Sav with a mischievous grin "You think you can do better?" throwing down a little friendly competition.
As Melody pointed out the map, Sav grew interested. This was not a dogfight, a ship tactic scenario, or a six check simulation. It was a pure, what is in front of you, racing simulation. That meant Sav could really just concentrate on the course and race, letting her natural spatial sense plot and track ahead, and push the Delta Flyer simulation to its limits allowed by the programming of the holodeck. She turned and smiled to Melody, right hand clasped within left, her tail flicking, as she said, "Better than the time, of course. Better than you, I can try." Sav churred gently, knowing Melody couldn't see her right fingers crossed within her left hand. "So, you're on. Loser buys the Winner dinner tonight."
Melody grinned "You're on!"
Sav grinned, "So, one at a time, or is there a second seat in the flyer so that one can watch while the other drives?"
"Come on, I'll show you. Its rather spacious inside." Melody beckoned with her hand as she started toward the flyer.
They made their way into the cockpit area. Melody pointed to the seat that was situated behind the pilots chair on the left of the craft "Here, you can sit at tactical while I try the first run if that's ok with you?"
Sav churred, not believing that Melody was giving her this advantage. "Are you sure? If so.. I would love to sit at Tactical and let you try the first run. Please, by all means." Sav sat down at the station, reaching out to touch the modern, yet, antiquated controls. They were direct electrical connections to deep within the ship, not allowing for anybody with hacking or modern skills with ancillary computer help to be the best. No, this was a true pilots test, just like the swamp buggies at home, which Sav had mastered thanks to her natural spatial sense and love of flying. No, Melody was right, she was a flyer through and through. But, how to let Melody win while enjoying the simulation, that would be the hard part. But then again, Melody just might win without any fudging, which would be fun.
"Okay, Melody, I am ready. Tactical mapping on screen. Did you want a best course map, or did you want to fly in by the seat of your pants?"
As Melody lowered herself in the pilots seat she grinned "Seat of the Pants sounds fine with me. Beginning launch sequence, stand by"
The craft lifted off the deck smoothly as the shuttle bay doors opened. It zipped out into the blackness of space as Melody brought the craft over to the start of the course which was marked by 2 signal buoys.
"All set and start the clock in 3........2...........1.........Now!"
The small craft shot forward under Melody's skilled guidance. The course was laid out in four sections that formed a rough square which led back to the starting point. The first section was through an asteroid field. To Melody, the background faded away. It was just her and the controls. The asteroids in the first half were stationary but as they got deeper in, they began drifting. The flyer dipped and weaved between the various massive rocks at breakneck speeds. Towards the end of the first section a massive asteroid came down from above them, seemingly on a collision course.
Sav enjoyed watching Melody's concentration enfold them into the sim. She looked at the tracking of the asteroids, and even though they would appear and disappear on screen and on sensors, Sav's spatial sense kept track of all and she immediately saw the silver thread of fastest time through them, as well as other threads with denoted times. Then, along came a big asteroid. The immediate thread before her, which was tracking what Melody was doing, showed through the asteroid. Would Melody catch it?
Going around it seemed the safest course, however Melody caught a glimpse of a passage straight through the middle that was just wider than the flyer itself. With a cry of "Hang on!" she took the craft straight through the middle, still having to compensate for the movement of the asteroid. As they exited the craft shuddered slightly as part of the tunnel grazed the aft shields. Melody swore under her breath then said out loud "Close one."
Sav was grinning as a light churring was coming from inside of her. This is what flying was all about, finding the opportunities to stretch ones skills and taking them, building up your legend and confidence in knowing what you could do, and confidence in knowing what was out of reach for the equipment being flown in. She called out to Melody, "You're definitely a Sailor of the Cosmos, and, naah, you still had some shield buffering left. So, can we do it again? *Churrrr-laugh* Common, you've a time to beat, keep going. "
Melody laughed "Lets hope we don't have to!" As the parameter of the asteroid field came into view.
Sav enjoyed Melody's flying through the rather slow moving asteroid field. For a race, it was fine, but she would have liked more action, like she had gotten with the Valkyrie in the Hayes Proving Ground. As she watched Melody approaching the open space beyond the asteroid with its turn towards the dense nebula, she grew thoughtful. 'I wonder, can I speed up the asteroid field, and would the course compensate the times? Or could there be new course parameters and times associated with the change?'
Sav called out a joyous "YEEHAW" as they cleared the field. "Awesome flying, GirrrlFriend. Now, what about that?" She pointed out the Nebula. Their shields and scanners would be on minimum in the field, and it wasn't really that the field was dangerous, it was that the thickened and thinning gasses, with their currents, could impede progress, help progress, or even shove them off and onto course. This was another true test of a pilot's skill and/or innate ability with his/her craft in feeling out what was happening with the flyer as the gasses pressed against the shields.
The flyer plunged into the nebula and almost instantly all but the short range proximity sensors went dead. Melody though about reducing speed, but then decided what the heck and pressed onward. The view from out the window was not much better and Melody was leaning heavily on her own awareness to keep going.
Melody had the map memorized in her head and the course she was taking she hoped would be get them through the nebular faster. She called back to Saveena "Is the proximity sensors picking anything up? It's like I'm flying blind here, and I was warned there could be some surprises in here"
Sav shook her head, "Nothing yet. Keep your eyes open and mind aware. You will see probably see the surprises before the flyer's sensors do."
Suddenly Melody got a sense of something coming right at her. A dark shadow was cast over the displays a split second before the Proximity alarm went off. In the windows a massive, seemingly never ending wall of intricate metal appeared less than 500 meters away. The color drained from Melody's face as she recognized the hull of a Borg cube, hidden in the nebula.
She whispered to herself "Dear God!" As she threw the helm hard over and the flyer performed a stomach churning right hand turn. She knew deep down that this was only a simulation, but the sight of that vessel still gave her a sickening feeling in her very soul.
Sav did not have a chance to yell out 'Debris' as Melody was already performing a maneuver to go around it. Now that they were past it, Sav saw what the sensors painted onto the display, a borg cube, small scout class. Now she knew why Melody had cried out to the Creator. She glanced at Melody, wanting to say something, but didn't, waiting till they were out of the Nebula.
Moments later they emerged form the nebula and all sensors came back online. A shiver ran through Melody's body.
Sav now had a chance to speak up in the lull between legs of the race course, "Are you alright, Melody? Can you continue the race?"
Melody took a deep breath, then half turned to Sav "What, and let you win be default?" The smile had returned to her face as she turned back to face forwards.
Melody quickly checked her sensors and found she was slightly off course. Some creative flying was going to be needed. In the distance the third obstacle came into view, but it was not what Melody had expected. The map had said pulsar with a two next to it which she took to mean a class two pulsar, but what she saw were two brilliantly shining orbs - A binary pulsar!
Melody did some quick mental calculations. Going round would add valuable seconds. Going through the middle..........
She called out "Sav, transfer any spare power to the shields and structural integrity field. I'm bringing the impulse thrusters online!"
Sav scrunched her muzzle as she tried to figure out what Melody was up too. Within her mind, she saw a silver thread of flight along the outskirts of the pulsars in an 'eye' area of gravimetrics, which would then sling shot them into the next area. Was Melody trying for that.. or... "Melody, dual pulsar, great chance of becoming an heirloom for a flea if we get too close.. what are you doing?"
A determined look came over Melody features. "Just like Jonah and the Whale, we're going in!"
Sav felt her spatial sense quickly calculating. There was a chance, two front-line starships had done it, one being the Voyager, but the delta flyer was NOT a full size starship, but a racer. The chances were, "Melody, over 100 to 1 chance of becoming a grasshoppers spittoon, not a good idea in a racer..." Sav looked at the controls, then did some transfers. As she worked on those transfers, she saw a golden thread going between the pulsars. Melody would need to go with the spin, entering at far outside of eye and ending at far inside of eye on the other side, of the spinning propeller shape that was the eye. If not, good thing this is a simulation.
Still, it was Melody's race, her decisions, and Sav had now rigged the ship for best possible survival. She now reported, "Long range and medium range sensors, life support, aux batteries, all tied to integrity field. Replicator and transporter reserves to the shields, and they are now close into the hull for max effect. The ship is as ready as she can be.. your course, your race... "
Melody grinned "I like those odds" She said as she applied full power to the engines and the small craft rocket forward. The vibration increased remarkably as they got closer. The computer voice cut in "Warning. Hull stress and temperature approaching designed safety limits."
Melody shouted over the vibration "Hold it together for another 10 seconds and we'll be clear."
Sav held onto the chair and console, while continuing to watch the gauges and keeping a balance with extra power being fed to shields or integrity fields, whichever was stressing or needing a nudge the most. She could feel the craft bucking against the stresses as the hull temp gauge already exceeded normal max limits. She called out, "Doing my best...." Sav was so thrilled right now to be a trained Bridge Command Specialist and not 'just a fighter pilot'. Melody was getting everything Sav could give her, plus a little more, and Sav hoped it was enough for threading the eye of the Pulsar.
The light from the pulsar was blinding as time seemed to slow down the vibration continued. Suddenly..............
The small craft shot out the far side like a bullet from a gun as the vibration died off. Now it was Melody's turn to shout of a "YEEHAW" as the craft approached the final leg of the course.
Sav joined in with a "YEAAAHHHH!" herself. She loved daring maneuvers like this, and was happy to help Melody in her endeavor to get it done without their 'Deaths' and the simulation ending. She did not bring up that with a craft like this, actually needing three people to properly fly, a single person flying her would not have been able to do the maneuver. "Melody, that was AWESOME! You go, girrl."
This final section contained a small subspace inversion similar to a wormhole and then the last part was pure speed, a dash to the finish.
Sav churred, "Alright, next part of the course, and doesn't it look lovely for a navigation hazard?"
The inversion also presented a navigation challenge as it twisted and turned but Melody skilfully guided the craft through and soon they were out the other side, the finish line in sight on sensors.
Sav sat back and enjoyed the sight of Melody thoroughly immersing and enjoying flying through the inversion, Melody's skills and love of flying very evident to anyone knowing pilots. Sav managed resources for Melody, making sure that whatever intricate maneuvers Melody performed, the Delta Flyer was ready. She churred as she saw the last part of the race track before them, calling out, "Final Seg, HOOOO!"
Melody thought 'Why not!' then called out "Prepare for 3 second warp jump and sudden deceleration on my mark......... MARK!"
Sav scurried to return the ship to normal configuration for a Warp jump. She was not sure if that was allowed or not and would ask Melody after they arrived on the other side. She did not even have a chance to call out ready as the Warp jump was initiated a split second after Sav finished her task.
The flyer accelerated and almost immediately decelerated again to sunlight for crossing the finish line.
Sav watched as Melody maneuvered for the finish line after the warp jump. She wondered how many pilots had attempted that, only to find their course so far off that they actually lost time getting back to the finish line rather than a pure impulse thruster rush to the finish? Probably a lot. She did not look at the large chronometer near the pilot's seat, not yet, only wanting to see it when it would stop as they crossed the finish line.
As they crossed the finish line, Melody brought the craft to a full stop. She span round and jumped out of the pilots seat and hoped over to Saveena. With a glint in her eye "And that is how you do that. Time?" She asked.
Sav churred, "Oh, 93 minutes and 01 seconds... "
Melody turned white for a moment and just looked at her friend. Her mouth moved but no sound came out.....
Sav burst out laughing, the very erotic and exotic sound echoing in the cockpit, "My bad, I read it backwards. Ten minutes, thirty nine point three three seconds. You beat the record by 8 point 67 seconds." Sav jumped up and gave Melody a big hug, saying, "Outstanding job. I figure those who tried the eye either were squished, or were so shaken having got through it they didn't have a chance to recover and finish."
Melody scowled and thought for moment "Could be better" she instantly brightened up again "Come on Sweetie, your turn" she gestured to the pilots seat.
Sav flicked her head, "Could be better? COULD BE BETTER? Melody, missy, anything more than a second off of the best record is a doozy." Laughing, she went to the pilot's seat and sat down.
"Okay, Missy, I need you to strap in. I am going to use gravemetrics on this run, oh, and we are going to sling off of an asteroid." Sav held up her wrist computer on her left arm and put in the command code sequences for the Delta Flyer. She now had direct access to the ships ancillary and propulsion systems. Unknown to Melody, she also had inset the time for Melody through each part of the race.
Melody settled into the seat at tactical and started working the controls.
Sav flew the flyer around to the starting line. As she did, she called out, "Okay, here are the things I want you to preconfigure before I start the race. First, configure the shields for double back for a one point five second interval. Second, configure the proximity sensors for 45 degrees out only, modulate with seventh order harmonics with a third order filter, overlap them. That will triple the range in the nebula. Third, configure a ten second stationary warp bubble around the ship by making warp 1 in station keeping. Finally, fourth, I need a timer of 33 msec tied to the Warp station keyed to warp 5.1. Let me know when your ready."
"OK, just give me a sec" as Melody quickly input the information in the panel. "Shields configured, sensor filter standing by and warp field parameters input.......... We're good to go on your word."
Sav closed her eyes, watching the 'course' through what she knew of it within her spatial sense within her mind. "Okay, your cue to activate each one will be my Mark to you. I will say, ready, set.. mark. Got it, and ready?"
"Copy that Sweetie. When you're ready."
Sav keyed the engines, thrusting forward even as she had the maneuver thrusters pushing back. She matched the force evenly, then said, "Ready.... LAUNCH!" Sav turned off the reverse thrusters and the flyer leapt forward, already doing some speed as Sav throttled forward at full acceleration. She knew Melody would be watching and getting ideas on how to shave her time even more. Sav had done this trick for speed many times in swamp races back home, the just teen girl outdoing seniors at their own game.
Saveena was right, Melody was watching her very closely. 'Wow, she really knows all the tricks' she thought to herself.
Sav went into the asteroid belt, full throttle. She twisted and turned, following natural patterns of the asteroids that she had learned when Melody did her fly through. She trusted Melody to handle the flyer systems for the run. "Corkscrew, left, then right, then shift over left.. let's see what she can do." Sav ran through the stationaries and into the slowbies. She churred, "Nothing like the Hayes Proving ground, eh?"
"You had more fun that I did there Sweetie, I had a Romulan Warbird staring me I the face. The Merlin is maneuverable but compared to a fighter its like a whale."
Sav churr-laughed at Melody's words. Then, her full attention returned to the forward view. She saw the large asteroid with the hole in the middle coming up fast. However, she wasn't going to shoot the hole, she was going to be different and use the lip. Her spatial sense showed the lineup she wanted as she gently rolled and shifted upwards towards the spinning asteroid. "Ready.... set... " The asteroid loomed on the viewscreen. "Mark"
Melody watched with respect as the flyer skimmed the lip of the asteroid letting it a low whistle. She was also keeping an eye on Saveena's time.
Sav shifted up and into the lip of the Asteroid. Its spin was with their direction and it came around to hit into their now double back shields. The craft accelerated forward, traveling just before light speed, for a few seconds. That rush catapulted them through the remaining field and out into the empty space before the double pulsar. However, the inertial dampers were not used to such vector changes and the occupants felt the 7g's accompanying the maneuver, which pilots actually loved to feel, well, most of them. Even though she felt tearing inside, and knew she would be gently bleeding shortly, Sav enjoyed the g-force sensations and called out, "How was that?"
"That was amazing Sweetie, you are amazing. Come on there's more to go."
Sav, feeling fully alive, fully there, a challenge of flying that she know only she could really gambit into, flew towards the Nebula. Forgotten was Melody's time, forgotten was that this was only a Sim, the challenge, the flight with her companion, was what was left on her mind. Sav called out, "Ready, Set... Mark."
Melody smiled to herself. She could tell now that Saveena was really getting into the spirit of the program. The look on her face told Meldoy everything. She quickly brought herself out of her reverie at the sound so Saveen's voice.
She called back "All set here, shields and sensors ready."
She churred as the flyer dove into the dense gasses of the nebula, the shields and sensors going to minimums. However, Sav was already tracking where the cube was as it was within an eddy of three of the currents of gasses flowing within the nebula. She caught a 'river' going her way, flying in the middle, the flyer prescribing seemingly random swoops and turns, never going 'straight' for the other side. Yet, the time and pace showed the flyer quickly getting through this area of space. Sav called back to Melody, "Borg cube upcoming, as you feel you are ready for, watch or close eyes.."
Melody took a deep breath and steeled herself. She set her jaw and replied "Copy that." She was determined to keep her eyes open and have a good look at her nightmare.
The borg cube loomed ahead, sitting in an eddy flow, slowly moving along with the stronger current of the main riverlette in this area. It was disrupting other flows, causing swirls and catches that would slow down any craft caught in them. As it approached, Sav looked back at Melody, concern on her face, "Fly by coming up," then quickly looked forward, consternation on her face, 'Melody's time.' Sav did a fly around to let Melody see the cube if wanted and to feel and understand her emotions, if she was watching.
Melody looked neatly out of the window as the hull of the Borg ship passed. Her face remained neutral, her emotions deeply suppressed as she turned back and concentrated on the tactical display.
Sav, in enjoying herself, had forgotten about the time of the best pilot on board the Merlin. She became cognizant of them within her mind and realized she was too far ahead of Melody's time. She concentrated on the spatial map within her head, looking for something specific. 'There you are... okay, time to let Melody shine.. ' She flew a jag to 'miss' a corner of the scout cube, then continued towards the exit, but, in a backwash eddy flow. As the pressures across the shields were equal, it seemed as though they were just in the nebula proper and Sav sure hoped Melody would come to that conclusion. As they left the nebula, Sav was several seconds behind Melody's time, even though ahead of the official record time.
Sav churred, voicing, "We're out." She felt wetness between her legs and she moved them gently, gauging how much. She was relieved to find not much, so she was doing okay with her insides. She almost burst out laughing, but still it, at the reason behind her frumpy flight suit. It easily hid the overnight pad lining her panties. She now called back, " How are you doing? Ready for the double pulsar? I won't be shooting the gap, but will be grabbing a gravity well handle for a sling shot. Ready for the need for speed?"
Pushing the Borg out of her mind, Melody smiled back at Saveena "I'm fine but you might have lost a few seconds in that eddy flow. You're going to have to punch it, so........ Bring it on Sweetie!"
Sav inwardly flinched, holding back and exasperated sigh. She had hoped Melody hadn't noticed. Now, she knew she would have to be even more careful with her timing losses to make sure she came in behind Melody by a few seconds. Sav answered Melody, "Thanks for the info, Missy. On my way."
Sav gunned the flyer and flew towards the double Pulsar. However, she shifted course towards the right side, following the gravitation pulsed arm coming directly outward from one of the pulsars. She zoomed towards it, then said, "Melody, stay in your seat, no gravity... now." The flyer could be felt speeding up as the now directed outward artificial gravity pushed off of the rotating gravitational arm. "Ready... Set... Mark!"
Melody saw that Saveena was not taking the same route, but this one was turning out to be almost as fast, with the gravitational field of the pulsar speeding them up quite dramatically
Now freed from the drag of normal space, the flyer sped up to light speed, and past it, being pushed by the arm, and then, off the end they were slung, the ball for the pitcher of the pulsar. Inside of Sav's head, she was following a secondary thread which would put them a little out of the way for the course. While they were now ahead of Melody's time, getting to the finish line under full impulse would put them behind, and the timing of the micro-hops would have to be dead on to finish ahead of Melody. The flyer exited the space of the Pulsars at high warp speed without having actually engaging warp drive. It slowed down back below warp speed, but several hundred KKlicks off course. A smile played about Sav's face as she called back, "We're out. Shift for Warp drive."
Melody was watching the timer which she had set up on the tactical display. Saveena was doing good. Really good, she might even shave a few seconds of her own time she thought as they approached the final leg of the course.
Sav did not need to call out anything. She now had 33 msec hop control of the Warp drive. Sav hopped the flyer, then paused a moment, getting her bearings, hopped again, got her bearings, hopped again, and flew across the finish line in front of her, just a couple of seconds behind Melody's time. By doing the hops, the warp was controlled coming in for making sure drift or shift didn't happen for this region of space. Sav just hoped Melody was at ease with what she did as that was the way everybody did the warp hops. Just, with Sav's natural spatial sense, she could have just kept the hops going without pausing at all. Sav churred out, "YES, made it."
Melody smiled at her friend then looked down at the timer and a flicker of a frown crossed her face. The clock had stopped automatically as Saveena crossed the line.
As Sav idled in the 'pit' area, she turned towards Melody, "So, how was my time?"
"Ten minutes, forty one point oh eight seconds. It's a great time" Melody was thinking to herself 'She would have beaten my time, you're slipping Mel' But decided to say nothing.
Sav pumped her fist, "Broke the record, and close behind Merlin's best pilot." She churred, "I call that impressive, myself." She glanced at the course, "So, did you want to go again, or is our time almost up?"
The timer showed almost up on the Holodeck, ending the timed runs by the pilots' extraordinaire.
