Meeting on High

Posted on Friday 6 May 2016 @ 19:27 by Captain John "Apollo" Barstow, M.D. & Commander Cale Llewellyn DSci

Mission: Old, New Ship
Location: CO's Ready Room
687 words - 1.4 OF Standard Post Measure

John was sitting at his desk finally finishing up the status report reviews. He was happy to nearly be finished, but, the realization he still had to deal with the detailer, Starfleet's personnel director, was setting in. He'd expected it when he had issued the orders directly to Alein, he just didn't look forward to the call. The Merlin CO just shrugged to himself and picked up the next PAD with a report from the new science chief. It seemed the man had jumped right into work. Barstow smiled and stood up, heading for the lift.

"Deck five," he called and was stepping off in a few moments. Apollo moved down the corridor to the science lab and the science chiefs office, "Lieutenant Llewellyn?"

Cale stood ramrod out of the chair he was in when he noticed the pips on his collar. "Sir! How can I help you, Sir?"

"At ease, Lieutenant. I'm John Barstow, you seem to have missed a step when you came aboard," John said with a smirk and moved over to the desk, "though I like how you just dove right in," he added and tapped the PADD with the report on it.

"Yes Sir. I apologize for not reporting in with you when I arrived on board. But I felt the need to get a handle on my department," Llewellyn said. "Please forgive my misstep. I promise that this failure to follow protocol will not happen again."

"It's alright, I wont throw you out the airlock this time," John replied and paused, "that's why we have security," he added jokingly straight faced then grinned, "so tell me, how did you find things down here? I have not had a chance to inspect the ship."

"Well, Commander, or do you prefer Captain?"

"Captain," Barstow replied, being big on holding up traditions, and leaned on the back of the visitors chair as he listened.

"Captain, considering this is my first chief gig, I found everything to be in order at least from my standpoint," Cale said truthfully but somewhat daunted.

John nodded and smiled, "Excellent," he replied, "and from this report you're off to a good start. Is there anything you need before we leave dock?" the CO asked and pressed a button to flip to a clean page on the PADD for any requests the man may have.

"No Sir, I believe I have everything I need...for now," Cale said with a big grin. He found himself becoming more comfortable with his new captain. And that would go a long way for him in the performance of his duties.

Barstow nodded, "Outstanding," he replied happily and set the PADD on the desk, "Well, we head out in a few days, I'd like for you to run a check on our scientific equipment and arrays, make sure they're all up and not missing anything. If they are liaise with engineering. Sound good?"

"Sounds brilliant, Captain. You know when I accepted this assignment, I wasn't sure what to expect and I must admit to feeling somewhat daunted by the fact that I would be serving as Chief Science Officer on such a huge vessel. But I am feeling more at ease with each passing moment. And I wanted to take the time to say 'Thank you for accepting me on board your ship.'"

John smiled and gave a slight nod, "no need to thank me, Lieutenant, and I'm glad you do," he added honestly, "I'll leave you to it," the Captain added and extended his hand, "it's good to meet you, Cale. And just so you know, the bridge has a full science station for you when you want to come up."

"Thank you Captain. I'll be up straightaway. Just as soon as I fulfill a promise to our CMO," Cale said before he went to procure a lab and a botanist for her.

"Sounds good, Lieutenant," Barstow replied and nodded as the young officer moved off. Now I just had to track down his new XO Barstow thought to himself and headed out the door and back towards the bridge.
