Michael had returned to Sick Bay with the new bar for Cara is assistant. This was an honor that Michael had never been able to perform in his career until now. He was overjoyed that the Captain allowed him to do this. He glanced up from his desk and saw Cara on rounds. "Lieutenant would you come in here please. There is something to discuss." He smiled as he set out the saki set.
"Give him 3 more CCs Meperidine but no more after this," Cara told the nurse walking next to her. She looked up as they started to pass the CMO's office and she heard Michael call out. She took a step towards the office then turned back to the nurse. "Get Dr. Hayes on the horn. He might have a suggestion we haven't thought of."
"Yes, Doctor," the nurse said and hurried off.
Cara walked into Michael's office. "What's up,Boss?" she asked as she walked over to his desk and took a seat in the chair in front of it.
Michael had already affixed the second gold pip to his uniform. As Cara walked into the office he poured two cups of Saki, the good stuff from home. "Cara have a seat." he said as he pointed to the chair in front of his desk.
"I have only known you a short time, but, in that time I have come to admire and respect you. Even call you friend, that is something that I have found in the past very hard to do. You are not only an excellent doctor, but a valued adviser. I can only hope that you feel similarly." Michael paused to see if she would speak up. He also wanted to make her squirm just a bit and drag this out for as much as possible.
Cara's cheeks blushed, slightly, and she smiled. "I feel the same, Michael," she said, not sure where he was going with this.
"All to often in our line of work our accolades come from journals, and awards pertaining to our discoveries or cures." He began to speak again. "It is always good to see when those not in the medical field stand up and take notice of our contributions and our work." He paused to sip his sake and smirked. Michael reached into his desk and produced the wooden box that the Captain had given him. Michael placed it on the desk in front of her. "By the power vested in me by Captain Barstow it is my honor to promote you to the rank of First Lieutenant with all of the rights and privileges therein." He raised his glass of sake in a toast "Here's to you."
Cara picked up the box and opened it. Her eyes went from the bars to Michael and back again. "Thank you," she said as she lifted her glass and then took a sip of the sake. Although rank wasn't that important to her, she felt a sense of accomplishment at knowing that her work was being recognized by higher ups. She looked back at Michael and noticed his new pips and said, "it looks like congratulations are in order for you as well."
"Thank you. It appears that the Captain is appreciative of all the work that we did to get the Merlin Sick Bay back in order. I want to add that I could not have done half of what we have accomplished here without you. However, there is no rest for weary as the saying goes. We must plan for what is to come, the possibility of assimilation as well as the injuries that come with battle. I long for a simple disease." Michael spoke intermittently and added a smile when he finished speaking.
Cara couldn't help but shutter at the prospect. "I'll go make sure we have extras of everything," she said, getting to her feet.
As she rose Michael drank back the rest of his sake. "Cara, it is the assimilation that I fear most. Concentrate of getting anything and everything you can ready to prevent it and/or bring someone back from it. I will be doing the same." After a short pause he continued. "Oh and Cara, thank you."
