A visit to Engineering

Posted on Monday 27 June 2016 @ 03:29 by Lieutenant JG Velin Ikiri & Captain Melody Jones

Mission: Old, New Ship
Location: Main Engineering
860 words - 1.7 OF Standard Post Measure

ON:

Melody walked into main engineering carrying 2 PADDS and paused for a minute to take in the room. To her, this was a thing of beauty. The warp core which dominated the centre of the room was currently ticking over at a fraction of its full potential.

She spotted Lieutenant Irkiri over near the Master Situation display or "Pool table" as it was referred to by the engineering staff. They had spoke on the bridge and during the drill, but had not really had chance to talk one on one and Melody was unsure how this was going to go, given their experience with the Borg. While she had only been in an incubation chamber for 3 months before being rescued, Irkiri had been a drone several years.

She walked over to him and handing out the first PADD "Hello Lieutenant. We've spoken but not really been introduced. I'm Melody. I've brought down my conn report for you to review. What did you think of the drill?"

He looked up to her, "Ahh Lieutenant, I've been expecting you. It is agreeable to meet you as well. To be honest, not very much, the chance of our primary computer core malfunctioning to such a degree without engineering noticing or the safetys kicking in to shunt all operations to one of the other primary cores and begin isolation protocols is highly unlikely. More to the point had this been a real event i would have initiated the protocols to isolate the core myself and shunted all data through secondary systems. Failing that i would have severed the connections with nanoprobes thus forcing the shunt and cutoff protocols. In any event it has put a strain on an already over worked engineering team and interrupted several maintenance procedures i initiated after our upgrade." He took the padd and began to look over it.

As he looked over the padd, Melody continued "I think you'll find it all in order, but what's on this second padd you might find far more interesting. I got it from a friend at Starfleet RnD who said he they never quite got it to work properly so it should be a challenge. It is called a Quantum slipstream drive. I had a look at it myself, but most of the engineering principals are a bit over my head. We might have better luck working together."

As she hand him the second padd their hands touched briefly as she thought to herself 'He's cute but he talks funny. Wonder if I should bring up the Borg subject or will he?'

He blinked in surprise as her voice came to him in his mind. 'that is not possible?!' he thought with more than a little alarm before dropping the padd. He picked it up and said, "e...excuse me i was clumsy." He was more than a little shaken by what he guessed had been telepathic contact. As far as he knew his telepathic senses were burned out shortly after his unasimmilation.

"What's not pos...... Wait..... You didn't say that.........but how? I heard you" A shiver ran through her body, her mind racing. "How did you do that?" She asked with a slight tremble in her voice. It took a lot to scare her but this was something else and entirely unexpected.

"It happened when........" Her voice trailed off as suddenly she crouched down next to him and grabbed his hand this time. This time her mind was hyper stimulated. Everything came rushing to the surface. Her parents, the Borg, being rescued, difficulty with doctors...... And the thoughts that came rushing into her mind made it feel like she had just been picked up and slammed into the nearest bulkhead.

And equally as fast as he was bombarded with knowledge and images so too was she. The USS Patomic, The vulcan medic, the telepathic contact, vulcan, Mt. Selaia, the monks there. All of his first experiences flooded through her mind.

He broke his hand free looking at her in confusion and... some other emotion he couldnt understand, "What are you doing to me?" He was having a hard time regulating his breathing his borg systems were in dissaray, He didnt know quite what to do.

Melody's face had a confused look on it and she was still shaking slightly "Me? I thought you were doing this. Come on, I think we better get to sickbay " She reached over to help him up, making sure she reached for the uniform on his arm. "Are you ok?" She asked, looking concerned.

He stood then freed himself, "I am ... uncertain, though you are right. We should proceed to sickbay." He was very confused, he was told that his telepathic centers had been burnt out by his experience on the Patomic and later on Vulcan. He turned to his second and said, "You have engineering." With that he turned and started walking for the nearest exit.

"Wait for me!" Melody shouted as she jumped to her feet and followed him out of engineering.
