Talking to Draxx

Melody was sat at her computer terminal waiting for a comm link from Draxx, Sansa’s dad. He had been assigned to a deep space exploration vessel before Sansa’s birth so this was the first time she was getting chance to speak with him. It was going to be an...... interesting conversation.
Sansa sat off to the side on the sofa, playing with Nibbles. Out of sight of the comm link.
The computer beeped. “Commander Jones, you have an incoming subspace communication.”
“On Screen.”
The monitor came to life with the image of a Bajoran male. Meldoy emailed warmly at him. “Hello there Sweetie. Have you managed to catch that elusive fish yet?”
"It's not that simple. I keep telling you RED," Draxx retorted but his smile was warm.
"So that's a no then?" Melody gently poked at him.
"Have you trained that hedgehog to stop eating all your shoes yet," he poked fun at her back.
She raised an eyebrow "Ah touche. So How are you finding it out in the back of beyond?" Melody was trying to keep the conversation light, but she was rather nervous about how Draxx was going to react to his daughters..... condition.
"Boring. So far its all science stuff. Great for the egg heads but not so great for my role. But lets not talk shop. Where is my beautiful baby girl?" He asked. "I bet shes got so big. I can't wait til we get back into proper civilisation and some shore leave so i can come for a cuddle."
Melody winced slightly at Draxx's chouce of words. "Yeah, so big...." she echoed. "Would you like to say hello?" She looked over to Sansa "Come here Sweetie and say hello to your Dad.
Still carrying Nibbels, Sansa came over and stood next to Melody, giving a small wave to Draxx "Hi Dad. I'm missing you."
Draxx opened and closed his mouth several times, Melody waited patiently for his brain to connect the dots and catch up the situation. Finally, after doing an impressive impression of this fish she knew he had been hunting his entire life, he finally spoke.
"Sweetheart, I missed you too. Wow, I guess I'm going to have to return the clothes I got for you on Epizo 17 and take you shopping for something bigger. And the Teddy bear. Your probably too old for a teddy bear?" He asked completely off guard but doing a terrible job of covering things.
Sansa quickly intergected "Oh the bear would be just fine Dad."
Melody placed her hand on Sansa's shoulder "Sweetie, I think its time for Nibbles's bath and your dad an I have a lot to talk about. Would you mind go and cleaning her in the other room?"
Sansa smiled "Sure mom." Then turning back to Draxx "We'll speek again soon Dad, love you." and with that she went into the other room.
Melody waited untill the door shut then let out a sigh "Sorry about dropping that on you."
"That's not a baby," Draxx stuttered pointing after Sansa who had disappeared off the view screen. "I thought you said they managed to halt the aging. How much have I missed. Tell me everything Red," he insisted. "I mean if I call next week will my daughter be older than me?"
Melody allowed herslef a small chuckle "No and they have. She will age like any other girl from now on so you've still got some parenting to do mister." Her smile cracked slightly and her voice wavered "We've just lost about 13 years of out little girls life."
Draxx nodded. "I wasn't planning to skip out on you you know red. Besides it was you that ran."
He sighed audibly. "Shall we not rehash that ehh? Looking forward how are we going to do this now I'm back from deep space. Daily subspace when we can and try coordinate shore leave so I can visit and you can both visit? Do you need anything? You know you can always count on me to help."
Melody smiled at him and at the thought of spending more time with him "Yes that sounds nice." She glanced around and added "I suppose a bottle of vintage Aldeberan whisky if you can manage it."
Draxx laughed. "Don't ever change Red." There eyes locked for a moment. "I'll see what I can do," his voice softened.

"Dam Red. I was hoping we could talk longer. Duty calls. I'll try call back after shift tomorrow. Stay out of trouble. And give my ..... "teenage girl a big hug and kiss from me."
"You know me ...." she started.
"Yes i do, stay out of trouble," Draxx repeated with a smile.
Melody kissed her hand pressed it to the screen before calling out "Sansa, come say bye to your dad."
The young girl came running in "Bye Dad, call soon won't you?"
"Always sweetheart. Keep an eye on your mother for me," he nodded and blew a kiss back.
