Making the Rounds

Posted on Wednesday 11 May 2016 @ 01:03 by Commander Cale Llewellyn DSci & Lieutenant Commander Gregory Alein

Mission: Old, New Ship
Location: CSciO's Office
1083 words - 2.2 OF Standard Post Measure

Greg had made his way through the ship; he'd already seen the Engineer, popped in on the Flight Officer, and even managed to get his check up with the Doc. It had been a rather productive day; however there was no more stop on his way back to the bridge; the Science Labs. Popping his head into the door way and looked around as he stepped through. The Science Labs was one those areas of the ship that interested him the most. Although Greg never fancied himself a Scientists not in the least, his scores were too low at the Academy, he still liked to keep up on all the latest trends. Stepping up to who he assumed was the Department Chief, he coughed. "Lieutenant Llewellyn," he asked?

Cale Llewellyn was standing outside his office when a lieutenant stepped up to him. He didn't recognize this new lieutenant in the red of command but he went to attention and replied, "Yes Sir, Lieutenant...?"

"Just stopped by to introduce myself," Greg offered a hand, "And meet the new staff. Greg Alein, newly appointed XO." He was still a little taken back by that term, it was odd to say. "You have quite the interesting record Lieutenant Llewellyn," he motioned for the Lieutenant's Office, "Why the Merlin, certainly there are other assignments out there for someone of your skill set?"

"Pleased to meet you, Lieutenant Alein," Llewellyn said as he took the offered hand and shook it albeit a little bit too vigorously. "Why the Merlin? I suppose it's because I like a challenge. And the Merlin looked like a big enough challenge. I didn't want any research post where the path to promotion was almost impossible to see. I wanted to be on a ship where one could see the road to bigger and better things most clearly," Cale said. He realized that he had just outlined his entire plan for his time on the ship. Maybe he could make it to lieutenant commander before he was reassigned. Just a stray thought.

"I can certainly understand the lack of desire for a career path that isn't inside an office," Greg stated. "And it is true that a ship will take you places that you will only read about in research." Greg took a seat across from the desk, as he crossed his legs in front of him. "So let's just cut to through the rest of the standard chit chat, if we can. I am a fairly simple Officer, you run your department well and we won't have a problem. I expect to be kept in the loop of all projects just so they don't come around to bite me in the ass later. Simple enough really," he stated, "Any problems with that?"

"Aye Sir. Well I gave our doctor a lab to grow her herb for medicine. I hope that was ok? I didn't feel like I was overstepping my bounds, though."

Greg smiled, "Your lab, your call." He snickers, "as long as the two of you ain't cooking up anything to take over the ship, we should be fine." He looked around the room attempting to get a feel for the man, however the room was rather bare; as to be expected on a new arrival. "So tell me a little about yourself Lieutenant," Greg asked

"Well what's there to tell. I grew up in 2 orphanages until I turned 18 thanks to my 'father' being a drunk and a gambler. Once I was of age, I applied to Starfleet Academy and proceeded to live my life as normally as possible. Starfleet turned me into sort of an rascal because of my ability to get into trouble more so than the everyday Academy student. But once I graduated, that changed; I became somewhat of an introvert again but only in social settings. In professional settings, I was still outspoken while on the job. During my first deep space posting, I was infected by a malevolent plant. After that mission, I asked for a transfer to another ship and luckily got posted here. So here I am; take me or leave me," the young lieutenant said with a smile.

Greg couldn't help but see the similarity to his own life. Greg wasn't completely an orphan but he might has well have been; and the father thing if the man only knew. Greg only sat back and listened, share there were differences but the odd similarity was almost too much to chalk up to mere coincidence. It would seem fate had intervened once again. "Your life and my own are not that different," was all Greg managed to make out. He wondered if the man had read over his own file, perhaps or perhaps not. "And I tend to take people as they are, until they give me reason not too."

"That sounds good to me, Lieutenant. I will make myself as plainly as I can."

"A man of many words I see," Greg joked. "Have you had a chance to review the staffing? And if so where do we need assistance," he asked attempting to get he man to open up more?

"I have enough staffing for now as far as I can tell, Sir. Please remember that this is my first chief posting and I may not be up to date on all the personnel workings but I am learning." Cale answered the Lieutenant trying to be as plain as he could.

"I try to let those who work under me manage their people, if you think you are doing fine that I won't step in," Greg explained. "So long as things work good in the end, I don't care about the process it took to get there. Just know that I am here and if you ever find yourself under water, let me know." Greg leaned back in his chair, just a little bit. He didn't want this to be one of those meetings, this was just two Officers having a chat.

"And I thank you for allowing me to run my own department. What with me never having been a chief o an assistant chief before, I truly appreciate this opportunity you are giving me; to let me sink or swim on my own merits is awesome."

"We've all been there at one time or another," Greg stood up, "just promise you won't let yourself drowned," he half joked, with a nod to the man.

"Aye Sir," Cale acknowledged the XO's comment.
