ON:
Captain John Barstow sat in the lounge near the front windows that showed the fore of the saucer section. He sipped on his synthale as he waited for his second officer and new science chief. Apollo had decided to meet the Lieutenant here in the more relaxed atmosphere after all the commotion and stress toil him in on everything that had been going on. Lieutenant junior grade Artis Lomar had come with a very high recommendation from Starfleet science as well as civilian science agencies. Barstow had been impressed reading the Trills record and knew he could use the officer now more than ever.
The doors to the lounge opened seconds later, and the Lieutenant in question entered, an obvious tinge of annoyance to his demeanor. He stopped quickly, a pair of conversing Ensigns blocking his direct path.
"I do believe all of our time would be best served by you moving out my way expediently," snapped Artis, a raised eyebrow pointed at both. They nodded swiftly before parting to let him through. "Standing in front of doorways," he muttered to himself. "Children."
Moments later Artis found himself standing before the Captain. "Apologies for my lateness," he added quickly. "Artis Lomar, as requested."
Apollo stood up and smiled, "Lieutenant, I'm Captain John Barstow," he greeted and extended his hand, "welcome to Merlin."
The Trill quickly took the hand, shaking it. "Happy to be back ship-side," replied Artis. "Big shoes to fill, I'm sure" he added.
Artis moved closer to a chair, inspecting it quickly before moving his eyes back to the Captain. "Not expecting an easy introduction to the Merlin. Already quite busy."
Melody entered carrying a PADD. "Captain. Here's the latest report from all department heads..... Oh! I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt."
She offered her hand to the new officer "I'm Commander Melody Jones. Currently Chief of Security."
Artis returned the gesture, eye the PADD she passed on curiously. "Only currently?" he asked, following up.
“Well when I first cam onboard I was fresh out of the academy. I’m a pilot at heart so I was the flight officer.” She glanced at Barstow. “Not long after the Captain pulled a Kobiashi Maru test on me.... I’d watch out for something like that.” Melody paused before continuing. “Not long ago, Starfleet started a new training program for officers wanting to broaden their horizons so I retrained as an engineer. I figured it would be cool to see how to get every inch of speed out of a spaceship. When I came back onboard recently it was to oversee an overhaul and refit of several key systems and the Captain asked me to stay on as Security chief and second officer.”
She looked back to Barstow “I’ve haven’t spoiled a surprise have I?”
Apollo chuckled as he sipped his synthase, "yes, I like doing that to officers the show promise....and you and Cale nearly killed me for doing it to you both," he added with a chuckle, "and no, no surprises ruined. Do either of you want a drink?" he asked and motioned the waiter over.
At that moment, in walked Llewellyn. "Well, it appears that you've started without me," he said with a chuckle. "Now, would someone mind telling me what's going in, please?"
Answering the Captains question first, Melody spoke "No thank you Sir, I'm fine at the moment." Before turning to Cale "Afternoon Commander. I was just giving the Captain the department report. Have you met our new science officer?
Artis offered a nod and half smile to those around him. "Just water," he added quickly. It seemed his crew mates were rather comfortable with one another. "Murdering the captain is never quite worth the paperwork, though."
"No, I can't say as I have. Commander Cale Llewellyn, DSci, former Chief Science and current Executive/Strategic Ops Officers. Pleased to meet you, Lieutenant Lomar, is it? I'll take a Trakean bubble juice, sir, and our new science officer is right. The paperwork on killing you would be exhausting. I've checked," Cale said with a laugh.
Apollo laughed, "I dunno, there's a two star General who may help you cover the paperwork," he replied with a grin and took a breath, "well, I'd like the Lieutenant brought up to speed and my ready room is getting..." he started with a pause, "well, the janitorial bots need to get in there. Commanders, since you represent the totality of ships security and tactical ops, do you want to fill him in?'
