750 words - 1.5 OF Standard Post Measure

ON:

It felt odd being on another ship again and a lower position but that wasn't important. What was important was he was with his daughter and Melody now. Draxx straightened his collar and pressed the chime to the Chief of Ops office.

The door opened and the refrains of a Klingon opera escaped into the hallway. A voice followed, "One moment, I'm almost done, have a seat." A few moments later a figure slipped out of a space in the ceiling. Marbim Rejal had tried for years to keep the traditional Cardassian sneer off his face, replacing it with more of a smile. Now, with his face being marred by some grit, the smile and/or sneer was humerous at the least. "Sorry, i've been tampering with the temperature controls in my office. I can never get it hot and dry enough in here for my tastes. Now, who are you and why are you here?" Marbim takes his own seat, a large, well duck taped captain's chair that has seen better days.

Draxx's mouth dropped briefly. He had not known his new boss was a Cardassian. I mean not that he followed all his species "prophets" claptrap and was what you would call a model Bajoran but still he didn't condone a lot of what the man in front of hims race had done to his.

"Lieutenant Ricardo Draxx. I have transferred in as one of your assistants. I'm reporting in sir," the last word choked him a little. He would have to, unfortunately, get used to it. So the cost of having his beautiful Sansa in his life seemed was a promotion from chief and now having to work every day with a Cardassian.

"Not what you were expecting eh. I'm not your usual Cardassian either, so don't let it bother you. Now, currently, we have teams out repairing damage from an encounter with the Borg and chasing down the vestiges of a nasty computer virus that the Merlin picked up. We have a Chief Petty Officer, Darlina Dunham, assigned to our department, who doubles up as Transporter Chief when she isn't busy. As I don't have anything super pressing at the moment, why don't you go get settled into your quarters. I'll check in with you later on any pressing assignments. If you can't find me here, then check Main Engineering, where I'll be keeping tabs on the Warp Core. If the Klingon Opera gets to be too much, I have a selection of Bajoran music that you might find more pleasant. Now any other questions for me?"

Draxx tried to process all that information it was a lot in one go. "Klingon Opera?" he settled on asking. Clearly the Chief of Ops was not your typical Cardassian. "Which ones are you into?"

"I have scores by Barak-Kadan and Keedera. I enjoy Aktuh and Maylota when I am trying to piece something together, but unlike most, I don't try to make my ears bleed and listen to it at a more acceptable decibel level." Looking around his office, with its sparse decorations he adds, "I occasionally try singing along with Gav'ot toH'va, although I'm not a tenor."

"I'm more of a bass but my range can hit some of the baritone. Perhaps with some training you could find out your range. I would have hear you sing that. I may be able to help you, if you were interested," Draxx stated. He had not expected today to be offering to help a Cardassian sing but clearly he wasn't your run of the mill Cardassian.

"That might be interesting. There are some places on this ship, including close to the warp core where the harmonics seem altered and allow for a much sweeter tone." Realizing what he just said he shoots his junior officer a guilty smile, "I've been running everyone off to play with the warp engines and the operas sound much brighter down there. Anyway, stop listening to me fuss like an old lady, go, finish getting your quarters squared away. I'll either meet you here in the morning or call you if something comes up."

"I look forward to working with you sir," Draxx said standing a little straighter and finding he meant it. Seems he might enjoy the company of this Cardassian. Anyone who appreciated harmonics and a good opera was a plus in his book.
