Mission:
A Whale of a problem (We're going to need a bigger boat)
Location: Main ops
Timeline: MD3 Evening shift
1170 words - 2.3 OF Standard Post Measure
ON:
Draxx had almost been late. Whatever this treatment, Melody was on was either gonna give them a baby or kill him. At the moment, he didn't care which.
"Sir," he nodded at Rejal.
"Lieutenant, just so you know, your wife pulled rank and went on the away mission to the planet's surface. Other than that, how are you, I haven't seen you much around the ship?"
"Sounds exactly like her, shes never one to miss out on fun if she can help it," Draxx said. "Good. I pulled some of my off time. Been trying to bond with my litt ..... well shes not exactly little anymore girl," he shrugged.
"How are you sir?"
"Not bad. I've been studying up on these, whales and their songs. We have nothing like them on Cardassia, and I didn't spend much time learning about them while I was at the Academy, too many other things kept me busy. I understand that Sansa has been spending time listening to their songs, has she shared anything with you about that."
"I wouldn't know that much. My daughter has been very ... busy since she ... well she met someone," Draxx said uncomfortably. "Not that I knew my daughter that much before with all the fast aging and such ... but I was trying ......." he was muttering to himself now. "Now shes ... well ... oh .... " He realised what he was saying. "Im sure shes doing important things. Just like her mother," he stated to try save face.
"It's ok Draxx. I believe you are compensating for a lot of changes to your life from recent events. I don't have any children, but I have been told that any time you can spend with them is precious."
"Its difficult being denying her childhood," the bajoran admitted. "Anyway what have we going on? What do you need me to do boss?" he asked changing the subject.
"Its funny, for the moment we don't have any pressing issues. As always I've got teams checking all the areas that have taken damage or given us issues since we started heading out here. Our Engineer still gets a sour look when she needs our help, but hasn't asked for any in a while. Astrometrics has been having power fluctuations if you want to figure that out, that might help all of us in the long run..."
Draxx nodded. "Okay I can bob down to the map people. Why does our engineer get sour?" he asked curious. What had Ops ever done there he wondered.
Almost snickering, "Its 'her domain' and she doesn't like us peons messing with her stuff. I have a sneaky suspicion after this last prank she pulled that the Captain may be having some intense conversations with her."
"Prank?" Draxx asked. Melody usually liked a good prank but the way he was talking made it sound sinister.
Frowing, Rejal shakes his head, "Our illustrious engineer faked a warp-core breach with an intruder on-board. The young 'intruder' was nearly shot, as it appeared he was planting charges around engineering areas. I don't know what she was thinking."
"hmm certainly not in any box Im aware of. How colourful," Draxx commented. "I haven't met her yet. Who was the intruder?" he asked curious.
"One of her engineers. He was stunned, but it could have been worse, much worse. While I appreciate the drill, and how fast our security teams responded, she should have reached out to alert the Captain. If you do go down there, be prepared for a fiery red-headed human not in any kind of uniform you would expect."
"I live with the firest red headed human on the boat. Not scared of the Chief Engineer sir. If i can survive marriage to Melody I can survive anything," Draxx said proudly. "Also my daughters pretty fiery."
Leaning forward, Miles almost whispers, "Don't let her know, but your wife is one of a few women who scare me at some level. I don't want to be on the receiving end of her anger, you're a very brave man, my friend." Leaning back Miles then continues, "So, speaking of your daughter has she given any thoughts on her future, I know she has the Librarian eating out of her hand at this point..."
"Don't let her know but she scares me on some levels too," Draxx quipped. "Thoughts to her future. Well thats up to her isn't it?" Draxx said. "I have no idea on what shes planning to do. I rarely see Sansa these days since she got into a relationship," Draxx said miserably. "What Librarian?" he asked.
Rubbing his chin, Miles thinks for a minute, "Carson, Mr Carson. He is in charge of the library we have aboard. I believe he is El Aurian, but I've never been down to visit him, I may have to change that."
"Sound like I need to too," Draxx agreed. "Ive never met an El-Aurian. Listeners right?"
"Yes. I read about Guinen on the Enterprise, but have never met one before either. I don't remember anything about them in the training I received on Cardassia either, so either the government didn't see them as a threat, or they don't know about them."
"The borg I believed wiped out the majority of their race. Theres not many survivors. I'm sure Melodys mentioned that," Draxx said. "I think they are rebuilding their civilisation on another planet now."
Shaking his head, Miles shares, "The Borg. The one race that has changed so many others. I wish the El Aurians the best. As to our librarian, he stays to himself, and has never reported any issues that would require us to visit his domain."
"Well i hate to say it but if Hes interacting with my daughter, the protective father in me is feeling like I need to know a little more about this guy," Draxx told him. "What excuse can I come up with to go visit the ships librarian?"
Grinning, Miles looks around, and leans in conspiratorially, "Power fluctuations are always a good excuse to go anywhere ... conduits burned out and need replacing is another ... be creative, just remember to be nice."
Draxx nodded. He actually though going to the Librarian for a book might be more believable. Perhaps he could get something on fishing. "I'm always nice," he stated. "Okay I suppose I ought to do some work. Nice speaking with you sir."
Miles nodded back, "Yes. I know when you came aboard I was a shock to your system. I'm honored to have you in my department." Coloring slightly he adds, "If you and your wife need a place to be discreet, you can use our office, just let me know in advance and I'll vanish."
Draxx couldn't quite believe those words had just come out of the XO's mouth. He really didn't know how to respond to that. "Okay ..... good to know ...." he flustered. Mel was likely to crack up when he told her that. But he found it somewhat uncomfortable. "Bye," he muttered.
