ON :

It was almost as if he was dreaming .... Someone kissed his cheek, then the same on the other side. he smiled, finding himself in that 'limbo' between sleep and waking, a hint of sea-sickness entering his thoughts ...

His eyes opened to see two small children, one either side of him, bouncing up and down, laughing as they woke their Father from his slumber.

"Come on Daddy, breakfast is almost ready." Mackenzie said, "Breakfast breakfast." Mia echoed.

"Leave your Dad alone girls, he only got home late and needs his sleep." Lana said as she popped her head around the door, "Breakfast in ten minutes." she informed him, ignoring her own suggestion."

~~~~~
Entering the Living Area he took his seat, Mackenzie one one side, Mia the other. Lana was bringing dishes from the replicator and placed a cup of hot coffee in front of him. Picking it up he realised he couldn't actually remember the last time he had smelt the aroma of a good coffee, it dragged memories to the forefront of his mind for a moment before his breakfast arrived. He told her he needed to contact his office before they ate and could see the disappointment she was trying hard to hide, he opened a Comm:
=^= Tan to Operations Center =^=
=^= Ops .. Ensign Keller =^=
=^= Just a quick check-in Ensign .. Any issues I need to be aware of ? =^=
=^= No Sir .. We are still holding position in the Nebula .. Both the Romulan and Vulcan vessels have sent people down to the Tri'Jema .. They are not in contact with each other from what we can determine =^=
=^= OK .. Lieutenant T'Seng should be on duty shortly .. I'm taking some time with my Family to enjoy breakfast .. Contact me if I'm needed .. Tan out =^=
He returned to his seat, the relief on Lana's face obvious. She told the girls to stop messing around with their food and they eat quietly, chatting amongst themselves. David was under the impression that school was beginning today, but he'd seemingly lost track of time.
"It's tomorrow Daddy." the girls said in unison, "We're going to the holo-deck today to go on the fair. Mummy said we can try a few rides before we start school, and it's OK to use it, isn't it Mummy." Lana nodded.
"Oh, that should be exciting." David replied, relishing the bacon and eggs, "I might even see if I can get away for an hour later and join you."
"The Commander Captain will let you." Mia said, amusingly getting the ranks slightly wrong as usual, "He's a nice man." she said, returning to her breakfast, not elaborating on her comment. David looked at Lana, who shrugged.
Pouring more coffee from the pot he glanced at his Wife, who was concentrating on the food on her folk rather than commenting on his second cup. Mackenzie reached out for the jug of orange juice but couldn't quite lift it. He helped her and poured them both a little more. The conversation continued and he sat watching his Family, again realising hos grateful he was to Commander Barstow in getting them here so quickly, he couldn't imagine what it would have been like to have to wait to return home following this mission before he could have been with them.
"Is everything ready at the school now ?" he asked Lana as the girls argued about which was the better fairground.
"Yes, I can't wait to start, though I'm a little nervous to be honest." she replied.
"You'll do fine, you're a good teacher Lana, and the classes will be much smaller on the Merlin. Besides, you have the two other teachers to share the workload."
"True ... Carmen and Talia have been great. We have a sound syllabus and decided on three classes, I'm sure it will be fine, first-day nerves." she said, smiling at her Daughters, who both agreed their Mother would be great.
"You decided on the five day school week then ?"
"Three for the first few weeks, it's all new to both us and the Children, so we are going with a three day week and we'll up it to five in a couple of weeks once everyone's settled in. More bacon ?" she asked, reaching over to drop a couple more slices on his plate, despite his weak objections ..........
