Drills

Mission: Old, New Ship
1430 words - 2.9 OF Standard Post Measure

1st Lieutenant Kai Ikaika tugged on the hem of his jacket in an attempt to get it to smooth out and fit correctly over his large frame as he moved down the corridor. Standing at 6'4 the Hawaiian native towered over most of the crew as he moved past, nodding to those who glanced over. He kept his head tilted slightly forward, giving him an ominous look as shadows were cast over his green eyes. As he made his way to the tactical information center to meet the medical chief and executive officer he reached up to make sure his shoulder length dreads were pulled back neatly and ran his thumb and forefinger over his goatee to smooth it out. That done he typed in his passcode and stepped into the two level room, pausing to look at the flurry of activity and then stepping to the nearby railing to see if he could see the two officers he was looking for.

Caroline it seemed was surrounded by testosterone. She felt small and dwarfed in this room. She looked around having already lost her nurse companions. Tara was on the upper deck ready incase any accidents occurred there and Zoe, well she just couldn't see her now at all with all the activity in the room. When a dark haired giant seemed to appear out of nowhere she jumped. From the uniform he was a marine. She didn't have much experience around marines but from what she had gathered Starfleet and Marine philosophies didn't always match up. Well regardless, they all bleed and fixed up the same way.

"Can I help you?" she asked staring up.

The Marine put one foot forward and leaned with both hands on the railing as he took a moment to take the officer in front of him in before answering, "I'm Kai Ikaika, Fox Company temporary commander," he replied in a deep baritone, "you must be Miller," he stated more then asked with a smile after seeing her pips, "I was told to meet you and the exec here to get some kind of drill going?"

"Dr. Miller," she said holding her hand out. "But feel free to call me Caroline," she smiled at him. "And the XO seems to be .... " she looked round and shrugged. "I have no idea."

"About ten steps behind Caroline," Greg smirked as he came in the door. He'd heard the Doctor's comment about her name, "ok no that doesn't sound right. Doc." He approached the gathered Officers, "So where are we at and what’s the plan," he clapped his hands together ready to get to work and do something.

"It’s your exercise sir," Caroline said amused. The truth be told she intended to be steps ahead of him in every situation if she could help it. "Medical are just here to patch you all up in case you get too boisterous."

Kai took her hand firmly but lightly, "it's good to meet you, Carolyn," he replied and chuckled at her response to the XO, "I have my people gathered and geared up with weapons locked on setting one. Outside of that you seem to be the man with the plan, sir," Ikaika replied with a nod, "I'm assuming we're support while securities got point?"

Greg smiled, as if he was a man with a plan. He'd already spoken to the Captain to seek his approval for a drill of this size. Greg didn't just want to run drills on Marines and Security, if the ship was really headed out to some remote area of space he wanted to ensure that all departments were at their top performance and ready for anything. "Actually Doctor," Greg stated, "there has been a chance of plans. You and your department along with the other departments will all be playing a part in this drill."

The Commander knew he didn't have much time, "I've programmed a standard Star Fleet Emergency Disaster Management Drill; this one involving a complete shutdown of the ship. Lieutenant Ikaika has we don't have a fully operational Security Team, you and your Marines will be assisting me in the Security side of things." He turned to the Doctor who seemed less them impressed, "I don't suppose I have to tell you your side of the puzzle." Greg looked at the Officers gathered, "the rest of the crew doesn't know yet, and that is the way we want it to run. Emergencies don't happen on a predictable schedule."

He smiled, "now I am sure that you all have questions," he looked at the time, "and you don't have much to waste?"

"So what your saying to me Sir is its business as usual for medical?" Caroline deadpanned. Her department ALWAYS had to be ready for any thing cropping up.

Kai chuckled then shook his head, "none from me, we're on SAR and security duty," the Marine replied with a nod as the doors opened behind him.

Barstow entered the room slowly and looked around, it was the first time he'd seen the room in operation. The CO nodded to himself as he spotted the group of officers and moved over to stand next to the Marine Lieutenant, "well, Commander, ready?"

Caroline found herself stand up a littl taller at the captains sudden appearance. Next to these three very tall men she felt rather dwarfed. Her eyes flickered to Commander Alein watching for his response.

Greg handed a padd over to the Captain, "At this point, ready as we are going to be Sir." Greg took a position next to the man, "I've contacted a few departments and plans are in place." He looked around the room, "All that we need now is for everyone to take their respective places and we will be good to go." Greg knew it would be odd if the Captain, XO, Chief Medical, and acting Security were all in one location at the time of a drill.

The Samoan nodded and stood up strait, "copy that, Commander, on my way out," he replied with a nod and was gone in a few short strides.

John took the PADD and moved off to the side, sitting at an empty auxiliary station. He didn't say to much, this was Gregs baby and he wanted to be more of a fly on the wall then in the middle of things. Besides, as much as this would give them insight into their crew this would give the CO a look at his XO's abilities as well.

"And that's my cue to head back to sickbay," Caroline said. "Try not to get injured Commander. Your not a fan of my bedside manner remember," she shot him the smallest of smiles as she made her way over to door.

Greg nodded as the two Officers left, leaving him there with the Captain. "This should be interesting, definitely something that no one would be expecting so soon after leaving spacedock. We will need to get creative if we plan on getting this past the Engineer...," Greg's thoughts trailed off.

Barstow sat back and chuckled, "well, if it were me I might make the drill look like it turned real by sending his consoles a signal showing conduits exploding down on the flight deck, right around where we store fighter torpedoes?" John suggested, "seal the door to the room and find a way to heat the door a bit?"

"I've got plenty of ideas," Greg added, "Did a bit of work and contacted a few friends last night for some more ideas. I think this will prove to be very enlightening."

"Alright, then Commander," Barstow replied with a nod and stood, "I'll be in my office, don't let them blow up my ship," he said with a smirk then moved off to the TIC office, "computer, pull up visuals for engineering, bridge, TIC, medical, Round Table and switch between security teams every two minutes," he ordered before sitting down on a nearby sofa as the display on the bulkhead brought up all the video in a grid, "now, let's see what they've got...."

Alein watched as the Captain left, "well this is certainly going to be interesting.." He took off headed to his designated spot. Tapping his comm badge, "Computer load program Alein 3 in ten minutes," he had already programmed the computer with a set of instructions that could be alerted or added to as the crew performed their tasks. He would definitely have to think on the fly to make sure he kept up with the changes as they progressed.
